I just bought a new Windows 10 computer and cannot get BoB2 to run. When I attempt to install DirectX 9.0C, I get a message that it is not compatible with the version of Windows I am running (Win10 Home). When I try to start the game in compatibility mode and as an administrator, there's a message about if I want this program to make changes to the computer, I click Yes, then nothing but Desktop.

Please advise.

Hi the DirectX from CD installation doesn't work, you will always have this bug message cause it's not compatible, I have windows 8.1 and have this same message.

So you need to Download and Install "DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)" before installing the game from CD.

Microsoft.com

Then install this Windows 10 Patch over your game cause original game doesn't start since it would need a crack for the 2.0 exe runs, and this patch already comes with a No-CD 2.01 exe, so you can play without CD Rom.

Thanks for such a prompt reply! I downloaded the DirectX file and it gives me a prompt asking for the location of where I want the extracted files. Where would that be, please?

Hi you're welcome, you can extract anywhere but I recomend create a folder in your Desktop named whatever you want and extract there. Then enter inside this folder and click on "DXSETUP.exe" to install.

Thanks again, Felizpe. I got DirectX to run, but it stopped when it said it was not compatible with my version of Windows (10 Home). The game never even gives me a splash screen -- just right to Desktop. Dxdiag says I am still running DirectX 12.

Some is ok. Around airfileds, sometimes church in city, bridges, . But town houses are missing. London for example flat except some famous buildings.

Hi thanks for the message. These new ground objects are not official and compatible with old 2.01 executable since it would need new codes inserted for the game reads the new shpbin objects and there is no coder skilled for this task at the moment. So unfortunately this patch is limited to use only the original ground objects.

I was able to run this patch even on 2.06 version :-D. Well im running it only on this version. Installed matrix 2.06 game version, then installed your patch and running on win xp 3 compatibility as admin and Working. (Have Win 10)

Hi it works but when instaled over 2.04 foward it will bug many things like invisible bullet trace and bugged france terrain so if you try to take off using German planes from any Luftwaffe France Airfields your plane will explode on ground.

Hi BOB2 Windows 10 Patch is already 2.01 version with some 2.13 features but without new ground objects, so there is not a way to activate it due 2.01 executable that is limited to use only original ground objects. (Original game doesn't have houses and villages unfortunatelly)

You can find 2.01 Patch here:
Moddb.com

Or maybe your problem could be incompatible video resolution, so test the following. Go to game main menu and click at "Options" and test this setting:

Use Desktop Res (Recommended): Off

3D resolution: 1024x768x32

Campaign Resolution: 1024x768x32

(Always use the same resolution value for 3D Resolution and Campaign Resolution)

This is the Default Game Resolution in case the game doesn't accept your Desktop Widescreen Resolution.

The last idea if the two above don't work is try running you game in windowed mode. Just open your "bdg.txt" file in Notepad and change the line:

FORCE_WINDOWED_MODE=OFF

to:

FORCE_WINDOWED_MODE=ON

Save the file and test the game.

If nothing above works this seems incompatible hardware. To make sure install original game without this Windows 10 Patch and test if the game works. You can do another test installing original game from CD then latest Patch 2.13 and try. Since bob2 runs in all Windows versions the only reason is incompabitle hardware.

Just a Note, when you get a fresh PC with Windows 10 or 11 a lot of softwares need to be installed for old games be compatible, so you always have to install the following softwares:

-Install DirectX 9.0c DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
-Install Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One
-Install K-Lite Codec Pack Full (Or else many games crash when videos play)
-Install nGlide - Glide wrapper
-Install and Activate .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
-Activate DirectPlay
-Check if DirectDraw acceleration and Direct3D acceleration are enabled in your windows

Thanks a lot, my frustration comes from these:

1) I'm running BOBII 1.00, the original one. Then I apply your patch, with old DirectX version. No luck

2) I have tested the windowed mode, with same results. I can just see the top-left corner of the menu, no access to the buttons. But in a window,

3) Unfortunately, I cannot get to the in-game options, I cannot even see the buttons in the menu. My big question is how to change resolution in some different way, some txt to edit maybe...

Anyway I have to test the SKIP_QUICKVIDEO line in bdg.txt.

By the way, I have it in D:. Should it affect? Yesterday, I had no success in C:\, so I decide to test the game in that HD.

Again, thanks a lot Felizpe. And congratulations for your work.

No luck. Same error.

By the way, just under bdg.txt I can see one other file, called bdg_out.txt, with the following text:

Trying to configure device 2
D:\bob\SRC\MFC\..\MFC\MIG.cpp(1418): Configured device OK
Closing down. During this session, there was one or several warnings.
Message(s):

Can not open texture 'd:\Battle of Britain II\artwork\dial800\title.bmp', using a dummy instead. retval = 75ff46a0, DummyName = 'd:\Battle of Britain II\TextureMap\dummy.dds'

I could not open the file 'bdg.txt'
Trying to configure device 2
D:\bob\SRC\MFC\..\MFC\MIG.cpp(1418): Configured device OK

And that's all. Are these failures apearing in your working BOB2?

Hi thanks for trying, maybe your CD is broken and installing corrupted files that can't be read I don't know. I never had these bugs in my Windows 8.1 and all Windows 10 users from A2A Comunity never had these bugs too.

If your CD is not broken but you still can't change your game resolution try changing your Desktop resolution, right mouse click in your Desktop and try find the Graphics Options to change desktop resolution. Try non widescreen resolutions like 1024x768 just for testing.

When you change your Desktop resolution, try testing all your desktop resolutions with the game using Windowed mode on and off.

If it doesn't work I recomend you to install Patch 2.13 cause this patch was made for x64 systems, old 2.0 and 2.01 just for x32. Maybe you could have more success with 2.13 Patch.

Felizpe, my sim is installed in D:, do you think the problem may be there?

Hi I don't know if the fact you installed in D: is the problem, but the ideal is always installing at default: C:\Battle of Britain II

My bdg_out.txt doesn't have these error messages so I don't if it's related to D: directory

It really looks like incompatible hardware, hope you find an alternative way to run it ;)

Hi.

I have not been able to restore the default addons. How do I install them as there is nothing for me to open. Also is there any way to change the skins for different squadrons or is it only one paint scheme for all aircraft?

I have always tried to play this in the past but never got it to work so I gave up. So I have no experience with this game. But now I seem to have a chance so I'd like to have the issues ironed.

Thanks!

Hi to restore default addons:
1-Enter inside your game folder
2-Enter inside the folder "Addons (OPTIONAL)"
3-Enter inside the folder "7-DEFAULT 2.13 Patch Addons"
4-Open using Winrar the file "2.13 Default Planes and Pilots.rar"
5-Extract all the folders inside this file to your game folder at: C:\Battle of Britain II or wherever you installed your game

Unfortunately it's not possible to use Multiskin so all aircraft will have the same painting. Multiskin doesn't work in 2.01 executable, and this Patch was made over 2.01 version.

To uninstall the patches the only way is first delete your game folder and then reinstall the original 2.0 game again since it will restore the registry and delete the patches' registry.

Delete your game folder then then reinstall the game first to restore your original registry. You must never install an old patch over a patched game since it will break it. 2.01 patch will only work in Windows 10 or 11 if you activate and install the following softwares:

-Activate DirectPlay in your Windows
-Install DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
-Install Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One
-Install K-Lite Codec Pack Full (Or else many games crash when videos play)
-Install nGlide - Glide wrapper
-Install and Activate .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1
-Check if DirectDraw acceleration and Direct3D acceleration are enabled in your windows
-Disable Windows DEP (Data Execution Prevention) for the game executable in case the "bob.exe" (Only if the game doesn't start so it means windows is blocking it)

Then run "Bob.exe" as Administrator and in Windows XP Compatibility mode ;)
