Do you want to return in "good old days" and experience that true classic - Half-life 1, (xen levels) but with improved graphics, geometry, and gameplay ? You can download it now, on the link below, or in Steam Workshop.
The only difference between these two resources is the way of installing the mod. During 7 years I made 7 versions of Improved Xen, which is a big number for this kind of work. You can see the evolution of the mod since its early version till now, and how Black Mesa influenced it. It was an amazing and exciting experience for me, and I share the result of my work with you, as usual. I tried to take the best materials from Black Mesa 1.0 to bring new spirit into my own mod. However, some things will not be changed because I have my own vision of Xen, and try to fallow the canonical Half-Life style.

In my opinion, even the latest version of Black Mesa still has some flaws and it is quite unstable. I faced them while adapting and updating my mod to its new version (1.0). I was surprised, because I expected to see more polished version of BM, than it is now. But the quality of Black mesa is the highest now, compared to all period of its development. I am sure, that all future BM updates will not destruct my mod anymore, and I put a lot of afford to avoid this possible problem. I hope you will enjoy my new Improved Xen. Meanwhile, you can monitor the news about Azure Sheep Remake, I am involved in its development too.
Also I am waiting for your feedback about my mod in the comments below. If you have some problems with it, I'll try to help you If I can. Thank you for your attention!

As you can see, I updated the mod to v0.4.1, it was necessary because of the detected bugs in the previous version.
Improved Xen is now compatible with Black Mesa (2012) Free version. Here you can download the mod version 0.51.
Improved Xen was a great mod released sometime after the 1.0 release, and it works on the latest version (Definitive Edition), but it does have some flaws...

Here you can download the mod version 0.4.1 This is the full version, does not need to install Xen v0.1 v0.11 and v0.4 Attention! This mod is compatible...
I updated this mod with the latest (May 15 2016) Black Mesa patches. This will fix the issue of NPCs not talking in the non-Xen chapters, and the Options menus displaying some entries incorrectly.
I have not played it through, but I tried it briefly, so it should work. There might still be bugs though, but probably not caused by my patch. Also, if you have any problems, try renaming the config.cfg file in the cfg folder (to anything), a new unmodded config.cfg will be acquired on game startup.

Send me a PM is the link is broken.
I am not affiliated with the Black Mesa: Xen mod, Black Mesa, Valve or any of its titles.
Mirellanmal, I didn't understand what you wrote. This version of Xen you updated works with the steam retail version of Black Mesa?
Or this version works only for the free modification version of Black Mesa?
There is a video of it working in the Retail version of black mesa?
Thanks.
My patch fixes a bug when using Xen mod on the retail Steam version of Black Mesa. I have not tried it with the mod version of Black Mesa.
You need to install the Xen mod before you install my patch. You need both.
And also I needed to manually set the gravity to 360 in the console, using the sv_gravity command.
And I have another problem that I cannot fix, that when I die once, I have to restart Black Mesa in order to get the AI (the enemies) to start working correctly. Otherwise they just stand there, doing nothing. I will probably use godmode.
I have not made a video. I do not know if one exists.
Thanks for the answer Mirellanmall
Oh wait, I think you need lower gravity than that. Try 250.
Thansk Mirellanmal. I was looking everywhere for the value of gravity and didn´t found it anywhere. Thank you a lot, for your help. Mirellanmal. Cheers.
I am getting an error after installing Black Mesa, On a Rail/Surface Tension uncut, Xen Chapters and Hazard Course. When I load the mod from Steam, it says it can't load character system.
Reinstalling will help but I believe one of the mods integrated into the game somehow caused the issue.
I do not think Hazard Course or On a Rail Uncut works with the current Steam version (at the time of writing). Surface Tension Uncut has been reworked and is now official and included in the retail Black Mesa Steam version. If you have the Steam version you do not need to install it, in fact, doing so would probably break the game.
And yes, as bfg666 said, install one mod at a time, boot the game and check that everything works, then install the next.
Have you tried starting a new game from any chapter?
Install one mod at a time to see which one is sending the error. Also, stop buying from Steam.
why?
