Initially developed and released by Gearbox Software in 2001, second Half-Life add-on, Half-Life: Blue Shift is a return to the Black Mesa Research Facility and another look at the Incident's consequences from the eyes of Gordon Freeman's best friend - Barney Calhoun. In 2012, Crowbar Collective has delighted Half-Life fans with release of the magnificent Half-Life remake, but there are still no released remakes for add-ons. This is when we are coming in - HECU Collective are developing the Black Mesa: Blue Shift - a free remake with use of Black Mesa resources and style. We will try to stay as close to the original Blue Shift and Black Mesa as possible. Our mod will be releasing partially, chapter by chapter, so those who are not patient for the full release will finally have something to play!

Report RSS Chapter 1: Living Quarters Outbound - Release

The first chapter of the remake, Living Quarters Outbound, is now released!

Posted by on

We are happy to say to you that we have released the first chapter of our new project! We put a lot of effort in it, using all the experience of previous years in creating modifications. Our composer, Daver, have released his third track for this chapter on Youtube!

We already have some good voice actors. In this chapter you can hear some of them - UnstoppableGiant voicing Otis and bONES!! voicing the tram vox system!

Living Quarters Outbound

You can download the mod here:

ModDB

Steam Workshop

Installation method:

If you have downloaded it from the Workshop, the files should be there (near the directory where the game located):

Directory of the mod

1. Download the mod and extract it's files from .zip (NO NEED IF YOU DOWNLOADED FROM WORKSHOP);
2. Move the files into your Black Mesa root directory (*\steamapps\common\Black Mesa), so "bshift" folder could be in the same directory as "bms" folder;
3. Launch the mod via one of the .bat files (bshift.bat for the new UI (RECOMMENDED), bshift_oldUI.bat for the old UI (NOT YET READY)).
3-alt. Alternatively you can set Black Mesa launch properties in Steam to "-game bshift" and launch it via Black Mesa Steam shortcut or from Steam itself.

!!!This mod supports English language only for now, so set you game/Steam to English in order to evade any possible problems!!!

Living Quarters Outbound

Relive the Black Mesa Incident as Gordon Freeman's best friend - Barney Calhoun! This first chapter will show you the start of what looked like a typical work day at Black Mesa.

Living Quarters Outbound

This can be a showcase of our current capabilities in mapping, soundtrack and voice acting. We would also like you to share your opinion on whether you like what we have done or not.

You might wanna try putting the "bshift" folder in to Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mesa, if you haven't already.

Interesting that here you guys have put in Barney's age, however in the original Blue Shift they never said his age. Was he really 25 during the resonance cascade or is this just an estimation of his age?

Amazing. I must say you guys came a long way since this "hazard course: after disaster" mod of yours.

The train ride was truly stunning. Taking this for judgement how the rest of your remake will look like and I think it's apparent that something big is under wraps for us. :) It was most certainly fantastic seeing the enhanced Blue Shift Areas in that very 1st chapter.

If I had any suggestions then only these: Delete Barneys age 'cause as far as I know we never knew how old he was. In Hl2 he looked like in his late 30 or mid 40's though.

Some npc scenes could need some additional love. For example the 2 Scientists crossing the extending bridge are just idling on their work space afterwards. Let em play some Animations in there till the train passes by. Same goes for all Npcs that appear static and just stand still idling around. Most noticeable during the Sequence where the Fence wont properly open up at that Security Checkpoint.

Eventually also utilize this AddOn:
Steamcommunity.com
to spice things up. The Scientists without their coats on would fit perfectly during the Intro ride close to the washing machines and where the bridge opens up. The Engineers and guys in green would also fit for any maintenance related stuff instead of Security Guards driving forklifts etc.

I'm very much looking forward to your next update. One hell of a good job. :)

Isn't it in the Azure Sheep mod? I thought there were more npcs than stock BMS in there

Calhounā€™s age was never specified in Blue Shift, not his ā€œAdministrative Sponsorā€ ever was alluded. Personally, such fan material should be removed.

Other than that, great mod. I look forward to the rest of the chapters. The reason why I believe such fan materials should be removed is because they could potentially introduce false facts to the Half-Life community as if they are truths.
