Report RSS Battlegroup42 1.6 - New Tank Destroyers and Assault Guns

The Battlegroup42 team is back with another preview of new models in the upcoming release, version 1.6, which is currently in its final testing phase. There are only some last minute changes and additions to be made. Soon we´ll be able to tell you a release date but let´s come back to today´s topic which is again something for you tank drivers out there.

Some of you might think, "Hey, I've seen that one already" when reading this news but we suggest that you take a closer look. Each of these tanks have been in BG42 already, but not in this kind of quality! Again we have managed to get rid of a lot of old models and replace them with new high quality models, giving you a whole new visual experience. The focus in this news is on assault guns and tank destroyers, meaning that we still have even more to show you in upcoming news.

Let´s start with a series of four Russian vehicles. The Soviets were impressed by the performance of the German assault guns and began to create a similar vehicle based on the T-34 chassis. The result was the turretless assault gun SU-122 which was mainly used for direct fire support for infantry units. It was armed with a 122mm howitzer which possessed an enormous explosive power but an inadequate anti armor capability. Because of that the tank destroyer SU-85 was developed in 1943. It was armed with a modified 85mm anti aircraft gun and proved to be an excellent tank killer which could even take down the Tiger and Panther tanks. Production of the SU-85 began in August 1943.

When the new T-34/85 had been armed with the same 85mm gun as the one of the SU-85 the Soviets began developing a new, more powerful tank destroyer which was to replace the SU-85. The result was the SU-100 - like its predecessor a turretless vehicle based on the T-34 chassis but armed with a very powerful 100mm naval gun. Production started in September 1944. The SU-100 was able to defeat even the King Tiger and was still used by the Russian forces long after the war.

The fourth vehicle for today is yet another assault gun. It´s a bit different than the three others since it´s not based on the T-34 but the heavy tank KV-1. The SU-152 was armed with a mighty 152mm howitzer, had a very strong firepower and frontal armor of 110mm. It was first used in Summer of 1943 during the Battle of Kursk and proved to be an effective Tiger killer. All four Russian tank hunters and assault guns were modelled and skinned by Koricus. They were coded by Sarge31FR.

The next tanks we are presenting you today are the German counterparts to those Soviet vehicles. Let´s start with a classic, the Sturmgeschuetz III. One could hardly imagine the Wehrmacht without this legendary weapon. Assault guns were easier and less expensive to produce than tanks with turrets. Used as self propelled artillery for infantry support and as tank destroyers as well they participated in every operation since early 1940. Our new model is a Sturmgeschuetz III G armed with a long 7,5cm cannon which was produced since autumn of 1942. When more and more assault guns were used in an anti tank role the need for a pure artillery support weapon increased. As a solution the Sturmhaubitze 42 was created - a Sturmgeschuetz III G which had its 7,5cm cannon replaced with a 10,5cm howitzer. Both Models were made by Le Jules and have been skinned by Postman.

Surely the mightiest assault gun in this news - at least regarding the weight of 65 tons and the armor of up to 200mm - is the Tiger (P) Ferdinand. It was developed using the Porsche chassis which had been built for the revoked Porsche battle tank design after the Henschel design was accepted. Called Tiger (P) Ferdinand at first they were used for the first time during the Battle of Kursk. Although proving the firepower of the 8,8cm cannon half of the approx. 90 tanks were lost. The surviving tanks were modified (getting a bow mg and a new cupola for example) and called Tiger (P) Elefant after that. They were used as mobile anti tank guns with great firing range mainly on the Western Front and in Italy until the end of the war. The Ferdinand was modelled by Koricus and skinned by Postman.

This concludes our news for today. We want to remind you again about the "Lt. Moeder Theresa Memorial Event" on 27th and 31st of May. You can find details about that event on our website. We hope that many of you will participate. And don´t forget to check www.battlegroup42.de regularly - the next news is surely to come !

Great tank destroyers :D. Though from what i've heard, the Elefant was terrible in combat.

bah i think the next vehicle to be added should the "Maus" that weighs 110 tons and has inch thick armour. what happens once all the tanks, planes, boats, ships, bikes, transports, weapons and equipment have all been modded will the next step be maybe going forward intime, sort of look at the korean war then vietnam, yom kappur, falklands, 1st and maybe 2nd gulf war. i can welp with the research and information gathering. British vehicles are my speciality from the Centurion (actually as far back as tanks from 1914 but thats too farback lol) right upto the Challneger 2. I know theres already game platforms for those wars but people with iMacs or Linux computers cant touch them, they havent been adapted to those platforms which is ashame.

We won't change the scenario !
Our goal atm is to fill gaps of missing nations, vehicles and statics. ;)
Maybe in due time we will try to swap the stuff to a newer game engine.
If you want to help us please register at our MOD website ! :)

btw:
Nearly all vehicles are replacements of our the current models ;)

If you could give me some informations about the equipment of the "15th Scottish Division" primarily "March-May 1945" it would be really nice.
f.e. tanks, anti-tank guns

BF2 doesn't fit our needs. For now we will stay at BF42 maybe BF:BC2 is a good engine for BG42
