Battleground 44 is inspired by and aims to be a modern HD reimagining of the 2002 classic PC game BF1942. The mod will feature more classes than the original game had, and will also aim to do away with unrealistic historically incorrect equipment. No longer will British use American weapons and vehicles. Japanese will also no longer be stuck to using German equipment and weapons. All factions will be using historically authentic equipment, weapons and vehicles.

Today we are releasing a massive update to the mod addressing lots of quality of life improvements, bug fixes, tons of new content and all new native shader model 3 rendering.

First up we wanted to show off our new trailer for the mod created by Yossarian the Assyrian.

Thanks goes out to him for showing off exactly what this mod is all about!

Next I wanted to show off some of the new Shader Model 3 features which were done by the Project Reality developer papadanku.

Here are just some of the amazing new graphical enhancements this new shader update entails.

SM3 introduces more DirectX features that we can use for Battleground 44. Below is a truncated list on what SM3 brings to the table for Battlefield 2 mods.

  • Derivative instructions
  • Dynamic branching (useful for soft shadows and parallax mapping)
  • High precision shading
  • Higher register and instruction limits
  • Special texture instructions (useful for sharper texture filtering)
  • Vertex textures (useful for 3D water/terrain)
  • Logarithmic depth buffer (useful for combating z-fighting)
  • Better Vegetation rendering

To learn more about his amazing work with upgrading BF2 shaders please go here! He also said that PR mod is making the shaders fully permissible to use in other mods, so this will greatly benefit the entire BF2 modding community!

And finally here are some screenshots of the game running with these shaders, plus some additional graphical tweaks I use in Battleground 44 such as native Bloom and HDR.

We hope you guys enjoy this update. Many more things are planned in the upcoming months such as an all new custom launcher Dnamro has been working on for a while now. We will continue to improve the game when and where we can.

Oh they are already finished, you can see them in the trailer firing some weapons. Thanks for the offer though! You can check how well the class name translations are, though I did run them by a Polish guy on our discord channel and he said they were good.

Great to see a new update! Just wanna ask, is the Stalingrad crash fixed in this version?

Sadly no, I managed to fix Iwo Jima and another map but this one is being stubborn for some reason.

I have noticed that in the previous versions, the landing crafts were very buggy, as in, you couldn't exit when inside as a passenger, and some other bugs, Were they fixed?

The bots will not lower the ramps and exit as a human would. The landing crafts they exit out of the side now like any other vehicles to keep the game from being broken, so unfortunately it is a limitation of the engine. BF2 was never known to have the smartest AI. But yes, we have far too many bug fixes to list. It is a much more polished game now, though still some places could use improvement.

Did you fix " battle for Pacific and battle of Britain" map as it crashed quickly after launch?

Yes, I am able to play through Britain map to the end of round now. Pacific I am not quite sure of the problem, but I discovered when I increase bots above 64 it immediately crashes on spawn, so seems it is due to bot spawn locations or something. Need to do more research. Additionally I fixed an issue where in one of the later dev builds released on discord I fixed Iwo Jima and Hukawng Valle maps not loading past 60% and they are now working fine. Unfortunately Stalingrad is crashing. But we are trying to fix it but this map is proving quite difficult to troubleshoot unlike the others.

The mod looks great, but it doesn't work, as soon as it loads into the game, the game immediately crashes, :(
