Ashes is a Post-apocalypse themed total conversion for the GZDoom engine. It combines old school build style level design and Doom style action with a twist of Stalker and Fallout.
Ashes 2063 is one of those rare total conversion mods that, from start to finish, consistently demonstrates professional production quality. If you played it without knowing what it is, there's no indication that it's a mod. You'd think it was New Blood Interactive's masterpiece or some classic you somehow missed.
The above describes both episodes, but Ashes is better than just that. Episode 1 is already one of the very best Doom total conversion mods ever made, being designed around 3D gameplay whereas many TCs are designed around the original game's 2D gameplay (no vertical mouse movement). This is the main benefit of Ashes being designed for GZDoom.
Not only is episode 1 one of the very best Doom TCs, it is also better than the vast majority of 1990s FPS games even. Not the best of the best, but better than most.
Then there's Afterglow, episode 2. This is among the best of the very best of FPS. GOAT tier, especially in the level design category. I'm completely blown away by how good Afterglow is.
Once again, modders have embarrassed game studios. The only thing holding back Ashes is the fact that it's a Doom TC, which means AI and enemy movement is very limited and simplistic, so you'll never get the same kind of engaging combat as DOOM Eternal or Unreal, but that's a given.
Ashes Afterglow is 10/10.
I love it
Great mod, with absolutely amazing music. Immensive and really atmospheric levels, and balanced gameplay. 10/10
Awesome mod! Finally rating it but I played through Part 1 a few months back (currently playing Part 2). I've been wanting a late '90s FPS Fallout and this delivers in spades.
It was best mod I played for DOOM.
I am big fan of original Fallout (1,2,new vegas), not that bethesda crap) and this is like playing fallout 1 again.
Big thanks to authors and I would be very happy to contribute or donate somehow...
I liked 2063 quite a bit, then experienced the absolutely insane jump in quality of Afterglow.
Best singleplayer FPS i played in a while. Revisited my ancient account just to leave this review out of obligation.
Many many times i said to myself "i would've bought this is if it shipped like this until now" and was greeted by many more hours of solid levels and worldbuilding after that.
If you like Metro or more specifically 80's madmax and escape from new york knockoff b-movies. No other game I've played captures that vibe like this one.
A stellar game, recommended.
Dammmmn.
Ashes 2063: Metro: 2033 but better
Ashes Afterglow: Metro: Exodus but better
You need to play this, the best mod i've ever played story, soundtrack and progression-wise, im not even going to go too much in-depth because you should go blind into this, played on arcade diff. perfectly balanced, sadly i couldn't get the secret weapon but i'll definitely do another playtrough.
Just perfect.
Not just the best Doom mod I've played to date, one of the best old school shooter mods I've played (Duke mods included). Outstanding style, art design, music, atmosphere and surprisingly great story and writing.
Easily deserves a commercial release. Put this on Steam right ******* now; it's indescribably good.
