Ashes is a Post-apocalypse themed total conversion for the GZDoom engine. It combines old school build style level design and Doom style action with a twist of Stalker and Fallout.
== Ashes 2063 (Episode 1):
Probably the best mod I've played. Very atmospheric, great sound design, great graphics. And I LOVE the music. It really feels like a separate game, not a Doom mod.
If you're a Doom and post-apocalypse fan - definitely play this. This is like "Doom meets Fallout 1/2".
The only flaw I personally see in the mod is the level design: while looking great most maps tend to confuse me. I often found myself in a situation when I was running around an empty level with all enemies killed for 10+ min trying to figure out where can I go next.
9/10
== Ashes Afterglow (Episode 2):
In terms of sound/music/visual/enemy/weapons design - it's pretty much the previous Ashes 2063 but better.
This is quite subjective, but:
In terms of level design and "quests" Afterglow was much worse for me. I had a problem with Ashes 2063 when I just couldn't find where to go next to make a progress. In Afterglow it became a nightmare. At some point you get a "quest" to find some parts to repair your bike and I spent over 4 or 5 hours trying to find a battery. All levels are empty (I killed everyone), I tried navigating at random, tried to "follow the right/left wall", I think that I've been to every location that I've found at least 6 times now and I cannot find a damn battery. I understand that this is my personal problem and someone probably found that battery right away, but after such a long time running in circles wasting my time I just gave up and stopped playing.
The thing is that I want to continue, I like the mod, but I just can't - running around trying to find some piece of junk for hours is just not fun for me. If second part of the mod was more straightforward that would be great, but it is what it is.
So "Afterglow" is 5/10 for me.
