Description

USS Masada comes under Klingon fire on its way to establish a mining outpost in the Inverness system.

In 2215 the Federation had finally spread into the Inverness system, closer to Klingon space than ever before. Considered of cultural signifance to the Klingons, the Federation ran the risk of raising the Empire's ire by settling the system. That said, the vast deposits of dilithium and other resources present in the system made Inverness impossible to ignore.

The Klingons watched on, seething with rage as the Federation began to build a presence in the Inverness system. The Empire had already shown great leniency in allowing the Federation to grow as large has it had. A Federation claim on a star system considered sacred to the Klingon people, however, was intolerable. As Starfleet began construction of its initial mining outposts and prepared to establish a major settlement on the fifth planet, the Klingons made their objections known. Violently.

Though outside the borders of the Empire, Starfleet's early efforts in the Inverness system were met with Klingon hostility on many occasions. Raids by Klingon warships quickly became a common fact of life, and as the Empire refused to condemn these acts of aggression, Starfleet's only receourse, short of withdrawing from the system entirely, was to increase security. Tensions with the Empire spiked as Starfleet squared off with Klingon warships.

Urgent diplomatic talks were held between the Federation and the Empire. Vulcan diplomats on Qo'nos had the difficult task of having to both reassure the High Council that the Federation meant no disrespect to the Empire, while standing firm on the principle that the Federation's claim on Inverness and the surrounding systems was legitimate under interstellar law. They had mixed success.

Though the Empire ultimately chose, for now, to recognise the Federation's legal territorial claims, relations between the two powers had reached an all time low. They did not improve.
