3: Downloaded and installed Misery
4: Updated Misery with patch
5: Made sure that:
"$game_data$ = true| false| $fs_root$| gamedata\" was set to:
"$game_data$ = true| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\" in the fsgame.ltx
6: Enjoyed Misery

That's weird. I have installed it two times with steam, the first time it went bananas because I did not have enough RAM to run it smoothly, the second time it worked flawless. Followed the instructions as you did.
Your system is able to run it I assume?
