If you have any doubts before update, copy whole TDM directory and update the copy. After you ensure that new version works for you, delete the old version.
Having Windows XP, you are absolutely right to worry. TDM 2.08 won't run at all on Windows XP. TDM 2.07 should run, but I'm not sure about it.
