It's always interesting to gain insight into other developers' methods. Especially as I see we are both using a very similar approach to optimization.
I did the exact same thing at first, but I had to take the optimization one step further due to the sheer size of my dungeons. So, I got rid of wall objects entirely - simply using the DS grid for world collision checks, as well as writing up a simple box collision system. The performance gain was monumental. Should you ever need it, I would gladly share some tricks.
