I've loved the Homeworld series for many years and was astonished I'd missed this!

Sound can truly integrate you in to a virtual environment.

Doom 3's sounds of distant banging, screaming and other gruesome noises really ramped up the fear factor for me, the same with AVP 2, when the motion sensor pinged for the first time I jumped clear off my seat!

As well as informing you what is going on in your immediate surroundings (gunfire, footsteps etc), sound and soundscapes can build tension and expectation, this can so often be overlooked by developers.

In the case of mods, poor sound or voice acting can ruin what would otherwise be a great mod!
