I have windows 7 and the solution is simple. Don't install games you want mods for under program files. Make a new folder like MORE GAMES and install under C\MORE GAMES\
Then all that permission crap goes away. After fiddling with administrator status, compatability and on and on and yanking out half my hair I found this method and it works! I do start as admin also to be sure though. This is assuming it's a permission problem you have.

In case somebody has same problem. Read somewhere to put in version number on the launcher prefewrences because otherwise it starts from zero. But DON'T. That's what messed me up. It doesn't want version in the preferences, even though it says that, it wants the BUILD.

Single player not working. Other mods like extended singleplayer work ok. Patched to v1.5 bf2142 (deluxe version) Plays for a while then crashes. Strange but heaps of r2d2s everywhere.

The sp is build 1.4 in the custom games list but for some reason the multiplayer first strike is shown as v1.2. The file for the MP is definitely labelled full installer for 1.4. Wondering if the recent hacking problem has caused a file mix up.
