There’s something innately satisfying when you see a well-built town or base that you’ve crafted with your own (virtual) hands ticking along nicely on its own. The Settlers series scratched that itch in an effective fashion as the game has you building up your own town and expanding it to become a glorious city.
25 years after the debut of The Settlers, the legendary build-up strategy series returns to Windows PC, under the leadership of Volker Wertich, the inventor of the series. The Settlers allows players to explore, conquer, and settle new islands in a medieval fantasy world.
Ubisoft has described The Settlers as a “build-up strategy series”, which I think is a very nice and succinct way of describing. There is no panicked strategising or actions per minute here, this is all about methodically building up a settlement from small hamlet up to bustling township. There’ll be a smidgen of combat interspersed, sure, but it’ll be mostly about eking out an existence in a new land while facing up to new challenges and discoveries.
