Hammerfight

Game review

Difficult, but tactically satisfying physics based smasher.

Hammerfall has you flying a wooden box, chained to a variety of weaponry of various weights. The key here is the physics. Momentum, inertia and mechanics are all properly represented which makes the game amazingly difficult, since your craft is so light. The sounds and 2D visuals are perfectly appropriate for the eastern feel of the game, and the connection of the various weaponry with metal or squishy enemies is oh-so satisfying.

One early tip is to reduce the DPI setting of your mouse (in game) to 100-200 to make your movements super-sensitive, but the game is relentless in its difficulty until you unlock some of the cooler flails. Alternative game mods such as Arena or Grim (hunting bugs) let you build up your money or rank, allowing you to buy new weapons and even upgrade them with gems found in Grim.

The story itself is curiously translated from Russian, but makes the game enjoyable enough, and with several endings and paths with rewards it will have you going for long enough to get into the game. Arena and the other game modes will keep you going after you finish the main game, as it is not replayable with the same profile.

Overall hammerfight is a curiously addictive and decently challenging game. It is worth playing the demo beforehand, and is also present in the Humble indie bundle 3 for good value.
