It is hard at first yes. Really though it's just like any skill or game, after a practice you get used to it before you know it :P
I don't know where you stand now about modeller experience, but if you are new and really care about it I'd recommend trying 1-2 more simple modellers like wings3d first. This will give you a know-how of 3d, then you're better equipped to try.
(It's like a game - some games are harder to master than others, but it only takes time and patience)
Yup, seems very old... I'd like to learn how to model in Blender, but it has very little clear interface. ;-P
