Have had this game for years unable to get beyond the opening scene. Today, thanks to your update, I'm several hours in and hooked. 4k res, 90 fov, and it's great. And almost like a miracle the game even runs without any special tricks on the big screen 4k tv through my Steam Link. No noticeable bugs hindering quests.

Could it be the graphics folder? A clean installation of the game doesn't have such a folder anywhere in the main directory. That's where the mod install sometimes throws people off and you get this exact error.

Sounds like you didn't install it correctly. One of the downloads should have a "graphics" folder. Just drop that into the main AvP Classic directory.

No, it's really a combination of pushing the game engine beyond the limits and Rebellion's lazy rush job of porting an old engine to modern operating systems. The platform (the game itself) just isn't stable on 64 bit Windows and they never designed the engine for it. Meanwhile the game and mod runs flawlessly on 32 bit Windows XP. No crashes, shorter loading times, perfection. Go figure.

You can do it yourself pretty easily. Before installing the mod (after extracting the files) find the new "avp_huds" folder and delete it. That should cover pretty much every model and leave the new environment textures intact.

I wish I had more time to redo everything because so much can be improved. There's so many maps and extra goodies left unfinished mostly out of boredom. Unfortunately, whatever little spare computer time I can find in a week is used playing and enjoying games. You miss a lot of good stuff when you devote everything to a mod over the course of a few years.

You can try backing up the original fastfile folder or finding the exact ffl files that contain the sounds listed in ffinfo.txt.

I did everything I intended to do and then some. There's quite a lot more I started, planned, tested, and left in various stages of development. But from my perspective it's done. I do still have all the tools and files saved and ready to go, and anybody who wants to learn or ask questions how to mod can email me anytime. If someone wants to continue the Redux mod I'm 100% supportive of that.

Before ACM came out that was my intention. After I played it any thought I had in salvaging that mess was swept away. I will not waste my time merging ACM with AvP.

I think I had it maxed out ingame whenever taking screenshots/videos. After a mission starts hit escape and the gamma slider is available somewhere in the settings menu. Bring it all the way to the right and select save settings or keep settings then return to the game. For whatever reason it's not there until you start playing. I'm going by memory and haven't played in months. This is one of those odd quirks of AvP Classic that still causes issues with people.

In the fastfile folder look for Snd29.FFL and Snd44.FFL. That should do it.

It was the first map I used when first discovering how to add high-res textures and other features into the game. I'd redo it again if I had the time.

You can quickly move the player start back to the original position with the official editing tools (specifically Inteng). Re-adding textures to every vanilla map would take hours.

What are the specs of your PC? With the mod installed the game's recommended requirements are more like a game from 2010. If you can run AvP3 smoothly you should be safe.

I used the official AvP Toolset, which I think you can still find on filefront. The first obstacle is you're required to have a separate installation of AvP Gold Edition on the same drive or else it doesn't fully install. Second, you need a copy of 3d Studio Max 3.1. Then once you get everything installed there's a few necessary dll files to drop inside the editor's directory or else it doesn't work properly on modern operating systems. If you get that far message me and I'll send the pack.

I doubt you'll have any luck with Linux and Wine, but it's something I never tried.

Go for it. Although Rebellion never released the code for AvP Classic they did for AvP Gold Edition almost 15 years ago. Compiling a separate free AvP Redux-like game may run into legal issues with Rebellion and 20th Century Fox. Rebellion is very protective lately of their own tech and Fox is even more protective of their character/movie licenses.

The AvP Tools setup program scans your Windows registry for a legit installation of AvP Gold Edition. If it doesn't find the game they will not fully install. It's unnecessary and stupid and I tried finding whatever script it looks for in the registry to create something of a "patch" to trick the tools into installing without AvP Gold but I never had much success.

I thought about doing that but never figured how to make the official tools not require a separate install of AvP Gold Edition.

Yes. It functions exactly like the Steam version. But you have to run through the AvP_Classic.exe shortcut found in the game directory and NOT the Galaxy Client. Otherwise it redownloads the entire game.

If you did everything correctly it sounds like your ISP cutoff the download at some point, corrupting the graphics folder and leaving out huge chunks of the mod.

Put everything in the AvP Classic directory. For me the GOG version defaulted to C:\AvP Classic

It's only for the updated Steam re-release. Sorry, but Rebellion never patched the AvP Gold engine. The filesize is so big because there's about a thousand uncompressed high resolution textures making up the bulk of the mod.

For people still having issues with random crashing at the end of certain missions here is a confirmed fix on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (the OS that seems to crash the most with this game):

Go to the AvP Classic 2000 folder in your Steam folder.
Find AvP_Classic.exe and right click, select Properties
Select the Compatibility tab
Check the compatibility mode for Windows 98/Windows ME
Check Disable visual themes
Check Disable desktop composition
Check Disable scaling on high DPI settings
Check Run this program as administrator
Hit Apply and OK
Double click AvP_Classic.exe to run the game.

It's unfortunate you have had such bad experiences with Steam. In a way you remind me of myself when Windows became the norm and I had to largely abandon DOS based gaming. It sucked, but you either get used to it or left behind with nothing new to play.

Jeez, and modern Windows is way more intrusive than Steam.

I bought every version of AvP long before the Steam re-release/update and it's by far the best one. It also has an ingame server browser, a feature missing from AvP/AvP Gold Edition. You won't be able to easily play online any other way. And none of the high resolution stuff in my mod is supported in the older obsolete CD versions. Rebellion handled all the patches.

I've never had any issues with Steam and complaining about it just sounds petty to me. You could have bought AvP Classic for less than $2 during the summer sale a couple weeks back.

There's a couple other non-Steam stores where you can buy AvP Classic, but it is missing the multiplayer.
