When you look up, you will see that the cars have been pushed down from the bridge. There's even a car hanging halfway over the edge. When you watch the last seconds of the first gameplay video, you can see the car (not the one that is loosing its tyre, that's another one).
Since there are combine structures to the left & right of the canal, it is most likely that the combines got rid of the wrecks to be able to move freely over the bridge and between the structures.
Some of the wrecks are sunken into the mud pretty deep, because they fell down from high above and some might have drifted a bit when the water in the canal was still higher.
At some point i was thinking of replacing and/or overlay parts of the bridge with combine-structures, but i skipped the idea because then it would have been really difficult to explain where the wrecks are coming from.

It's going to be one of the key-locations, so i really try to make it as distinctive as i can. And there will be a lot going on in this chapel...

yeah, i wish i could add these things as well (at least the modified HUD is in work) but as i wrote in the news, it's way too much work for me alone...
I once tried to gather a team for a HL1-Mod, but well... it's a long story and let's just say there are many reasons that you've never heard or see anything from this mod :))
And after that i wanted to create something all by my own...
