S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Lost Alpha

Mod review

This mod was released in its current state because some...person...thought it would be a swell idea to upload a pre-release version to the internet. The rest, as we know, is history.

Yet, considering this is an unfinished release, the level of detail and the attention paid to creating the environments doesn't fall too far short of superb. The lighting, while unusually bright in directx-9 mode, is noticeably improved over the three commercial S.T.A.L.K.E.R. releases, although the performance is generally worse. While Lost Alpha is not the graphical or technological equal of Metro: Last Light or Crysis 3, it is still a beautiful game.

The game difficulty is reasonable; I'm only playing on veteran, and to be honest I find it somewhat easy. This is perhaps because I've some experience with brutally (Read: unfairly) difficult mods, like Narodnaya Solyanka; speaking of which, Lost Alpha -- an entirely new game! -- has, it seems, fewer bugs than any version of The People's Soup ever did.

Lost Alpha is a far more ambitious project than most of the commercial, capital-i "Indie" drivel on kickstarter and steam. Dezowave made this game because of...well, I'm sure there are many reasons. But the facts are that they finished their project without any direct or regular compensation and you know what? It's damned good! Other developers could learn a thing or two from these guys.

Bravo!
