This is a minor detail, but steep parallax mapping doesn't work. Everything about this game looks fantastic, but the parallax mapping I'm seeing is totally 2007-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It's not up to par with what we saw in CS or CoP, and it's far, far worse looking than the now years-old sky4ce's implementation for SHoC.

How hard would it be to code-monkey sky4ce's implementation into LA?

It's "working," but I agree it looks terrible; it seems like it's the same implementation as in CS and CoP. Why the developers didn't opt to use Sky4c's implementation (or Kingo64's, which is a further-optimized version of Sky4ce's) is beyond me because GSC's method looks like ****.

The project wouldn't have been released in this state were it not for the leaker. There's really nothing that can absolve that guy of what he did.

Yeah, I always go hostile on the military. I hate those *****. This is quite a shame, though and while I accept responsibility for killing those ******** while leaving the cordon (They said some ******** about how "I warned you stalker," even though I approached with my weapon holstered. So yeah, they didn't live) it's pretty ****** that I can't return at all to this area, no?

K, it is IM-*******-POSSIBLE to return to the cordon. Some military asshats are positioned both in front of and behind me upon loading the map and promptly gun me down. And guess what? THEY'RE STILL THERE WHEN I RETURN DAYS LATER. I know this is an kinda-sorta beta thing, but this is so annoying I'm not going to play this anymore until the devs feel they have a completed product without game-breaking ******** like this. I must be patient patient patient.

Fantastic game but nowhere near complete.

The dickhead tester who leaked a pre-release build as an "April Fool's Joke" should be forced to suck on a cactus pacifier. What an *******. He really ****** what was an otherwise marvelous project.

Thank you, I am glad. It is tough to gauge from the comments section what is going on with a project, you know, especially when it's been such a awhile since any new shots have been posted, something you've since remedied!

Now, I apologize for coming across as a bit of a 5h1t but trust me, I wouldn't comment if I didn't tremendously appreciate what you were doing with this fantastic game; from the screenshots you've shown us -- the most recent ones especially so! -- you've upped the graphical caliber of the ol' x-ray engine to something probably approaching its technical limit without access to source code, which for a game using often blocky geometry dating from 2007 (at its most recent) on an engine dating back to, what, 2003, 2001 is incredible.

It is too bad you have to do this whole affair solo; it is a labor of love, as the best of our efforts always are. So, that being said, it's great to hear you're still on track for a "it'll be done when it's done" release and keep soldiering on!

Sooo...this isn't being released...Why? Because of what the comment section indicates is something like a childish dispute about what, exactly, well -- I don't know! Who implemented what already-done-before effect in the X-Ray engine. My two lincolns, but unless your particular implementation is totally original, or it is your own original implementation that is being ripped-off by another party -- then you have a reason to complain. But this just seems like you, Meltac, have a bruised ego besides someone affiliated OGSE took the initiative to release a shader or two that is something similar to yours. Why the butthurt? Who said this is a competition with a prize? Grow up!

Actually the task isn't to replace sprites individually, although the shishi sprite editor (which is the only program you need besides the fft patcher) can do that--it's just that this stage wouldn't be the best time to do it because the goal at hand is to get rebirth working. To that end, all you want shishi to do is restructure the ISO so that the original game can be properly patched with rebirth via ppfomatic. So basically try this again. take a clean, unpatched tactics image and let shishi 'restructure it.' close shishi and then do the patching process in ppfomatic. for me, this made the palette changes visible both in formation and in battle. If you follow these instructions to a 't' and still find yourself having issues then I dunno what to do...

btw, how many kilobytes is your image after you restructure and patch it with rebirth? mine is 539,748 kb.

After fiddling around a bit with the FFTactics image and a few progs on the internet I've figured out how to get the new sprites to appear in battle. It's pretty simple:

1.) download FFTpatcher version 0.478 from
Ffhacktics.com

2.) make a backup of the original image in case this process doesn't turn out right for some reason.

2.) extract all the files in FFTPatcher_0.478.7z and extract 'em somewhere

3.) go the extraction dir and run ShishiSpriteEditor.exe

4.) go to file-> open ISO and select yer disc image of FFT

5.) If your image is like the one I have, you'll get a message saying that the ISO needs to be restructured. select yes

6.) let it restructure the image. when it's done do the ppf patching process

This might not work for all versions of the game; I only bothered to try it with the torrent file mentioned by rodman

Okie, the torrent finished and I am seeding it. That being said, the palette inconsistency between formation and battle sprites remains. This 'problem' was also present in the .img hosted at emuparadise. Every CD image that I've tried this mod on thus far has produced the same result. Besides this minor issue, though, everything else looks legit; the proper FFT Rebirth main menu screen is in place and the characters in the first orbonne monastery battle seem to have expanded abilities (enemy archers with charge+5, ally knights with hi-potion ability). Maybe they had these in the original game, though, as it has been a minute since i last played this gem.

Thank you for the information; unfortunately, fantasyanime's torrent only has one seeder and progress stopped at 99.7 percent :-/ Grrrrr. In the meantime I'm Dl'ing FFT from emuparadise and I'll report back on how the patch applies. Also, when/if the torrent finishes I'll seed it for a little bit!

I also am not seeing the new sprites in battle, although they do appear in the formation screen. Other than this minor annoyance in visual continuity everything seems a-o.k.!
