Castlevania: Simon's Destiny

Mod review

It's absolutely impressing to see two of the greatest retro games being combined into one.
Atmposphere and gameplay are on the spot.
Must-Play for both Doom and oldschool Castlevania fans.

Old Good STALKER Evolution

Mod review

OGSE 0693
This mod is truly amazing. Haven't played too much yet, but so far, I'm totally blown away!

10/10

UPDATE:
After playing some time (Kordon, Garbage, Agroprom), I'm still amazed by this mod. The amount of features added to the game is truly massive. And everything seems to work very smooth on the technical side (this is not standard with STALKER ShOC mods).
The mod is definitely much harder as the original. And it can lead to very frustrating situations like being killed by enemy grenades very often.
All the new quests are awesome, although they feel a bit raw around the edges... lots of "don't know where to go or what to do"-moments.

All in all, still 10/10 !!

UPDATE 2:
After playing even more, I feel like I'm really "getting into" the mod now. In the beginning, I was just blown away by all the new, exciting stuff. Now, I come to understand how some things work.
The mod is really, really good and very well done.
However, some aspects aren't as good as others. Here are the cons:

1) The translation is not of superior quality. There are quite some errors here and there. Most of them don't do any harm, but sometimes, it can lead to a situation, where you have to guesstimate if you want to solve a quest. (Example: looking for a "pipe" in the village, when it should have been "chimney")

2) The new quests are truly amazing and very creative. However, there are LOTS of situations, where you have to search for a specific item and, for the love of god, can't find it. It such cases, the item is usually there, but super-well hidden. TOO well, if you ask me. The developers got a bit carried away here.

3) There are lots of design choices, which werde made in order to make the game harder for the player. A good challenge is never a bad thing, but all these changes lead to an atmosphere, where save/reload will occur frequently among most players. I would say, the game was un-balanced in disadvantage for the player. (Examples here are the economy, missing zoom when using iron sights and detection of enemies with radar and PDA)

All in all, these three negative aspects combined make me change my rating to 9/10. (Btw, I don't list pros, since almost everything else about this mod is great so far ;)

Wasteland 2

Game review

WL2 is a great game. Oldschool and entertaining.

I have to substract one point because the game was horribly un-polished upon release and the "Director's Cut"-Version was more likely the "Should have been like this from day 1"-Version.
But then again, it's a very large world with tons of detail. It's to be expected, that there are some raw edges here and there.

I have to substract another point because of the combat.
Really, this game is like ALL about combat. But the combat feels really stiff, compared to something like the new X-Com remake. Don't even compare WL2's combat to REAL turn-based combat like in Jagged Alliance 2. Sorry, but the combat in WL2 is uninspired and rather boring.

The most severe issue I have with this game is in the game-mechanics.
Really, the only thing that matters about your squad is the skills, your team has. There are some skills (opening stuff, disarming traps) that you HAVE to have. The game pretends to be playable in several ways, but in the end, it is not as flexible as it seems at first glance. The recruits you can find along the way may be fun with their different personalities, but you can only pay so much attentioin to this. You have to select them according to the skills they have, which is a sad thing.
In the end, WL2 is not really much of a true RPG in this regard.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game. I finished it twice (1x "normal", 1x "Director's Cut"). I like it very much, but, at the same time really, really wish, it was a better game.

GMDX

Mod review

A great mod for a classic game.
I really like the approach and the concept behind this mod - overhauling the game without drifting off too far. This is on the one hand really some classic modding going on here. On the other hand, it takes the game into modern times and makes it interesting again even after you beat the original dozens of times.

Not to mention that the mod is also classic in the regard of being DRM free and doesn't try to be a fancy DLC of some sort.

Mod review

I'm not discussing the quality, which seems okay.
But the new outfit of JC seems totally out of place.
Seriously, a blue coat with floral patterns paired with some sneakers and blue jeans?
Sorry, but this doesn't fit into DeusEx universe...

Fallout 2

Game review

A true old school classic.

I could talk about this game for hours but what's the point? If you're into CRPGS, you should definitely check this one out.

I will just give you one hint: If you really don't know the game and play it for the very first time, don't let the first part of the game (Arroyo) deceive you. This part is not really representative for the rest of the game.

Deus Ex

Game review

Deus Ex... good old CLASSIC Deus Ex is a perfect game. Not perfect in the way that it doesn't have it's (slight) share of bugs and flaws. Compared to modern game titles however, it can be considered bugfree.
No, Deus Ex is perfect in the way, that it offers a really, really, nice experience.
The gameplay is a mix between shooter, stealth and RPG. And YOU decide for yourself, how this mix is balanced in the end. You can basically play the game almost 100% like an ego-shooter or almost 100% like a perfect stealth-game. You can neglect all the RPG elements except for attributing some statpoints or cou can talk to each and every NPC and try to dive deep into the story.
Story is, besides the gameplay, the next BIG point in this game. Deus Ex has a GREAT story and you get easily sucked into it. And that's without 10GB of cinematics. It's really good old-school in this aspect. Story is told by the actors (NPCs) themselves and develops right before your eyes while you play.

Seriously, get this game for a few bucks and just play it. You don't really need any mods. Google for "Kentie's Deus Ex launcher" and "Kentie's Unreal engine renderer" and you should be allright with Deus Ex on modern systems.

Brutal Doom

Mod review

*Updated for Brutal Doom V20*

It almost feels like most things that felt unbalanced to me were magically changed in the newest release. I still love this mod. It's really fun to play. Most new features of Brutal Doom combined result in a slightly easier gameplay. But this aspect is easily tackled by playing on Black Metal difficulty, which makes the game challenging.

This mod really deserves 10/10 and the author has my respect!

Old review for v19 below

I really love this mod. It adds so many good features to the game. Playing DooM or DooM II really does feel like it did back in the good old days. I just have to say that the creator deserves my respect for achieving this feeling in a mod.

So, why just 9/10?

Well there are some (minor) things that don't feel like they're really perfect in their current state.
- The voice acting when saving a marine or flashing the finger at monster is of significantly lower quality compared to the rest of the mod.

Furthermore, there seem to be some balancing issues.

- Some weapons feel not 100% balanced (maybe 95% ;)
- The assault rifle feels a tad too efficient (maybe lower damage, rof or accuracy?)
- There seems to be little to no use in using the super shotgun. The regular shotgun is way better (much faster and almost equally powerful)
- The minigun shreds through pinkies like through butter (maybe increase recoil or lower damage?)
- The rocket launcher seems rather weak (maybe increase damage or splash?)

- Some enemies feel a bit unbalanced
- Lost Souls feel slightly too strong (maybe decrease hp or attack speed?)
- Barons Of Hell feel slightly too strong, too (maybe decrease hp?)

All these balancing issues are minor and just IMO.
All balancing issues experienced during Black Metal difficulty.
