I noticed there are some were not too happy with this decision to turn Hedon into a commercial game as I thought so I wanted to clarify some things because I don't want others blaming Zan so much on this ordeal.
It was actually me that convinced him to turn this mod into a commercial indie game. I honestly had good intentions as I thought it would do him a better service to commercialize this game and dive into the indie game dev scene and given the freedom the new licensing terms GZDoom has provided (and the new tech feature the latest version has allows a project to use iPK3s as a binary source to run requiring no single iWAD from any other id Tech 1 game to run), it has essentially indicated an opportunity to revive id Tech 1 as a commercially competitive engine that can help games sell (while still requiring much effort in artistic creative freedom, but virtually no need to alter source code in C, like the original id Tech 1 requires). It does not even need to follow John Carmack's original GPL terms anymore, especially since there is no C modifications to begin with! One can literally turn their mod into a game without having to release all of their code and content - only strictly what is necessary for modding their game.
More importantly the motive behind this was independence - it can help an original project stand out on it's own two feet, and even parent more mods for it, or even potentially form its own mod community. Mods usually seem to have less attention or attraction on the gaming market due to fact that its reliant on existing games and require some technical knowledge to install and run it, Something that sadly many people even to this day is still too lazy to do, especially with id Tech 1 games that favor the savvy and the curious. Also, perhaps it's just me, but I noticed that for some reason, mods seems to have less respect or regard these days than they use to when I was growing up.
Anyways, I played this game since it's alpha stages, testing it periodically and giving tips and tricks to improve the project whenever I had the chance. I know some who have followed the former mod for some time might view the commercialization as some form of betrayal and I do not blame you if you do, but I strongly recommend giving the full version a try for yourself, not just because of this review or my words. Even the freeware demo already gives a good taste of the game, and the full version is indeed much better - all in the very similar fashion Doom and Doom II use to sell their games [freeware and full version]. I have never had a refreshing Doom or Hexen experience since the 2000's and Hedon brings so nostalgia to the Golden Age of shooters; the 90's decade when games use to have merit.
Finally, a disclaimer: I am NOT in any way, shape, or form receiving ANY profit or compensation from Hedon or Zan. My advice was entirely voluntary and free-of-charge. I truly wanted to help Zan get his foot into the door with the indie game world and make a difference in an industry that is seemingly eager to destroy itself (at least with the AAA scene), and I intend to do the very same with my own game as well now that I finally managed to pay off at least the loan from a failed development rush two years ago. I have full confidence, that this game and many other great ones will become the new future of gaming, and many of the gambleware-riddled AAA's run by abusive, greedy, publishers and developers will become lost history or serve as a cautionary tale on what not do when making a game.
I hope you all can understand. Again, I apologize for disappointing or upsetting any fans loyal to Hedon when it was a mod.
Always, ever vigilant.
