And yet the general impression is that this mod is great through and through. My response is due to these people, thanks.

I agree that the source engine has potential outside of the norm. Dear Esther was great. This tried to do something similar and failed.
"This mod isn't a failure, nor even bad, because it lacks certain aspects. You don't have to have stunning graphics to make a masterpiece, nor do you need decent graphics for a good piece. Just a happy medium has been achieved so far."
I do not play a mod expecting stunning graphics. The thing is the mapping is just terrible. I could easily accept minimalist mapping, like most of portal had, but this is not just simple design, it is BAD design. You can say a mod should not be penalized for bad mapping, but I imagine you would think differently if you went to a movie to find out it was shot with an old cellphone camera.
This mod is NOT a "happy medium" just because it has a few small points of quality, it is a disappointing low.

1/10
I elaborated in my review, but please people, do not fool yourselves. It had a narrative far removed from the average mod and in some ways of considerably higher quality, but that does not make it generally good. It was a predictable old trope and honestly really boring. Even if you want to give it 10/10 for story though, this is a mod. Mods NEED good mapping and design, and no one can believe this had either, it was terrible. If all you want is a quality narrative, do not make an hl2 mod. Make an interactive story with simple art in flash or on a website or something. Do not go into a medium with several critical assets if you are only going to try making 1 or 2 of them good, please.
It is really a shame because I took this mod totally seriously and expected a lot out of it until I watched this pointless, cliche trailer that makes me feel like the actual content of the game will be as shallow.
The problem is simply that the buildings are boring, smooth, and repetitive. Just look at google images of mansions. No one builds them with identical, tiling floors like that. I would withold most criticism since it is a WIP, but the fact that there is a building at all there suggests that it will at least keep the same general shape, which is basically just boring and unrealistic. The rest of the windows are too big, too. They do not make windows full sized on floors above the first hardly ever, either. Basically just look at some pictures for reference. It seems pretty unnatural and too smooth like it is. If your building would be easy to make out of legos, it is probably not that appealing. I only go to the trouble of criticizing because this is average-nobody mod quality, whereas the rest seems to be at least somewhat exceptional. Good luck, good job so far, and I hope you do not let this environment piece end up as your weakest link.
I only pirate games that are genuinely unreasonable to buy, like really old games, vaporware (such as System Shock 2), totally unlocalized games, or ones so rare they cost like 100$ for hard copies when I could just download a rom or iso. Immoral? Sometimes. Do I care? It is hard to. If every pirate had my policy, though, the effect on the industry would be nearly nonexistent, since I do not pirate games whenever it is reasonable at all to buy them, even if they are expensive or anything. That being said, I have felt ripped off enough by some games in the past that I want to pirate games by the same dev/publisher out of spite (eg, spore), but so far I have always reasoned it would probably not even be worth the effort.
How to cut down piracy should not even be a debate any more. Go ask Valve. Provide good, convenient service and you get pirated a ton less, simple as that.

You guys are pussies!
I no longer support moddb as a community.
I can afford it easily, and I really liked the original and was excited for this one, but I do not support a commercial release at all. There is no need for it. I would have even donated if you said you needed the money for it, but waiting for all these people to track you and get excited then saying "whoops, not free!" is not cool. Untracking.

This isn't ****** source. No way. The jig is up. I will never believe it.
You just got BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSTED!

Here is the thing though: You are a retard.
high hopes for this one
Yeah so I elaborated for 15 minutes on why the mod sucks. I figured it was more fair.

Major points: lots of bugs, ****** story/mapping, useless modding, basically a real step back from quality
:C!!! When I go to donate it says the event is over! I wanted to contribute to this experience.
"fighting fascism is more noble than wanton shooting of students"
Is it..?
Somehow I find it hard to believe this is not some sort of hoax.
Very rarely do I have almost NOTHING to criticize, and in this case there is at least nothing substantial. I will not take points off for lack of story or new gameplay, because it was described as it was, but in one point soon after I arrive on the surface for the first time, I somehow had to go quite a while without any ammo pickups at all, just grenades and crowbar with a tiny bit of pistol ammo. Besides that, a couple bits of the mapping was illogical (a zombie falls from a vent above me, I look up and it is totally sealed 4 walls there for no reason), but you even did better than most people do on map logic, so overall very great mapping, pacing, and general gameplay.

In closing, the only thing decaying here is my brain cell count every moment I am on your page, and the people saying that this mod is deep and depressing hold no candle to the amount of abyss that welled up in my heart as a result of suffering through such a terrible mod, let alone the shock and sudden weighty addition to my demise of humanity once I saw that it somehow actually got a score as high as 8.7 here (for that is the reason I felt inclined to do you this favor in the first place). Feel free to come back in 20 or 30 years once you have been more or less rehabilitated and have maybe learned the first thing about design in any area. Until then, please leave these discharges of what you may mistake as creativity either totally neglected and allowed to pass, or kept exposed entirely exclusively to your psychological and philosophical peers -- that is, pre-teens, stoners, non-sentient beings, the otherwise mentally handicapped, and any combination thereof.

I would love to tell you what you did right, so you guys could focus on that, and so that maybe you could improve yourselves in whatever areas you have any sort of a chance in, but the truth is I can not really name a single thing. I do not know your development history, but the nicest thing I can say to you in clean conscience is that if none of you have ever done anything like this before, AND you were on a deadline (because that is the only way I can wrap my mind around this level of failure), it JUST MIGHT be understandable that this is what you came up with. While I can SEE how something like this might happen if that was the case, however, I can still not forgive you for it because projects like that should not even be put on moddb.
They may be few and far between, but there are at least a couple actually GOOD mods out there, and they could use the courtesy of (loosely-termed) developers like yourselves NOT flooding sites like this with your half-baked, unoriginal excursions your minds go on as they wonder around confused for a day or two after what I must assume could only be the most jarring of a concussion.

This is really unimpressive. Everything it could have had going for it... didn't.
Starting off with the tangible, the mapping and level design sucked. They were not interesting at all, way too blocky, plain, boring, and no one tell me that was on purpose, because if it was meant to achieve any effect, it undoubtedly could have in several better ways. The voices were grating enough BEFORE they were ran through a ****** mic or sound program, and the only consistent "gameplay" section, the platforming after school, was designed so horribly that I could transverse the dropping platforms by jumping across their side, as well as regularly, which you might think would be the first thing the mapper would have tested, but I guess not. It seems like you could not put any thought or fun into the only game part of the mod, despite it being a minute long.
As for the idea of the mod, this trope has been done a thousand times before, and this brings nothing new to the table. It plays like it was designed by someone going through an overgrown stage of teen angst with some sort of pseudo-inspirational self help book at hand. Its incompetence grew from unsurprising to depressing once I was on the "school" stage and realized the whole mod would be like that, from depressing to laughable when I saw the deeply thought-provoking "Does any of this matter in real life?" question on the blackboard (which is a yes or no question, not a true or false question, by the way), and finally from laughable back to depressing again once I got to the end after 10 minutes or so, saw both endings, and wondered why I decided to browse moddb at all, today.
