Report RSS Angry rant. Criticism at it's best. Would love some answers pt.II

Moddb.com

Let's talk about what Scott said part 2.

1.In reference to PWNED.COM you said,"It is horribly ugly." I beg to differ sir, it's simple. And moddb.com V2, V3, and even V4 are all victims of FRAMES. The graphics on V4 are hardly any better. The tabs look like crap. And the "new" flash videos are so compressed they sound like garbage, the articles are struggling due to a complete lack of comprehensive material and I have to question why am I even still here when it's looked this way for 4 years man?
2.Clicking on a game profile and all you get is a boxshot- well that's more material than we get at moddb.com Whenever a game comes out it takes at least a week for the page to be revised, reviewed, and given a decent description. Most of the games released aren't even on MODDB unless they are moddable or popular. Or a senior member tells you about it. At least they have a somewhat complete or soon to be complete system going at PWNED.COM and I can add the game to a collection or now playing list, etc. I don't really care about their review of the product since noone ever uses a site like that for reviews. I doubt anyone uses MODDB for it. Considering the complete lack of enthusiasm along those lines. We get the option as users to score it, because MODDB doesn't have staff to play these titles.
3.Ads- Scott, every site needs ads. You get money from guess what- your ads.
4."calling themselves a social network"- Moddb is certainly not a social network Scott. But I'm pretty sure you're trying to rectify this right?;)
5."instead of focusing on news and real content," Wait wait wait. Contests, prizes, rewards, debut dates, community activities, LAN parties, server renting, beta testing, these things aren't real content?
6."they focus on user profiles" - This is the number one reason why a site should exist. The user.
7."and all the user profiles have is a comment box," Not true. I have CSS, CSS2 and the ability to go beyond what profile options MODDB.COM has ever given me. Recently the addition of uploading pictures, wow. Though, a loved feature here is what many members know
A. You're trying to shape moddb.com into a social community similar to gamespot/myspace
B. You're trying to add features that stimulate the activity of more than just senior members but earning new member traffic.
Let me just show you the inside of a member profile at the website you claim has less than moddb or moddb has equaled it.

Aycu30.webshots.com

Also, I gained 9 friends that are all active in the community and I didn't request a single one of them. Three of them are now on my Xfire and playing BF2 with them. I'm seeing way more options than what MODDB.COM has ever given me. All I'm seeing is options for mods. Mods cannot exist without....you guessed it- GAMES.

You locked the topic because you're afraid of comparisons and options you cannot code or achieve-Understandable
You locked the topic because you're jealous-Why?
You locked the topic because you discourage traffic towards other gaming sites that do not include MODDB.com

I got news for you.

Not only did I join, but several other members also joined it by now.

Just two of them I found:
Aycu01.webshots.com
Aycu33.webshots.com

~End

Ps. No personal hatred towards Scott or any other moddb member. This is just a rant and addresses issues you need to be aware of when bashing other communities.

I think it's good to have a nice mix. I do like features that myspace and pwned have, however there are so many of the social networking sites now that I get a bit bored of it...I personally still prefer mod db.
The reason I like mod db is that I find if I try and talk about making games, as opposed to playing them on other sites like myspace etc I find that A: People assume i'm big headed because i'm trying to make a point that I both make and play them, which isn't the case at all. I just find it really interesting to talk about development too as I generally spend more time doing that than playing these days. And B: Most people on them are not interested at all in making games, they only like to play them and stick their noses up at anyones attempt to make mods, because they aren't made by some big corporate developer. So I do kinda feel like I fit in wayyy better here ^^ but that's just my preference. I think it's good to use a mixture :)

While I agree with you, I do not like the bland and distasteful promotion of absent material. Dull and dreary, moddb is just now coming to life after being on the internet for 7 years. I've spent 4 years at least with this place. I do like moddb for the simple ability to find more content for a game I have already.

I do not use moddb to find games
I do not use moddb to find the opinions of another gamer as I have my own
I do not use moddb to find people to talk to- it just happens and at a very slow place.

In response to what you mean by noone is interested in making them.... Everyone in this day and age is a critic. And the worst thing you could do is ask someone who has never had any experience in the field what you think should be in a project. Because you're basically offering them the chance to take their ideas, and dump them off on you. Not only that, but anyone can criticize something that is meant to be played. Otherwise, don't release it. Keep it for yourself.

Moddb is not a social community in anyway. In fact, it is an unfriendly environment. And Scott knows this. And I believe he is trying to make it a friendly environment but by outwardly expressing we have features that other sites have(when we do not) only makes me and other users sorely disappointed in the theme and mission of this site as a whole.

Read the whole thing, interesting argument. I do agree on some points, like the tabs looking rather ugly, and many implemented concepts aren't exactly original. Although it seems that its for the better, if there are really such few active members within the community compared to the total listed members, a little more of a community base to draw from wouldn't hurt. Progress is rather slow, but I guess it's to be expected.

Although the "Private Profiles" functionality is really irritating and stupid, IMO.

Let me just say something about the tabs. In all of my time on the internet, we have had Jasc, Adobe, and Macromedia products specifically designed for graphic enhancement and webpage development. I see nothing but the same slanted comment boxes, and tabs that make this place appear as if it was stuck in a 2001 paradox. We didn't need a new Editor in Chief, we needed a web designer. And we needed staff that gave a damn.

Joe, Karuto, Sticky, Methulah. What happened to the moddb that kept my forums clean? That kept flaming from happening? That didn't just cater to elite memberships but the 5-10 post little guy starting out? Where is it?

What happened to when our site owner posted in the forums regularly? Scott is on for an average of 3 hours a day; everyday. I have watched his online status and what he was viewing quite thoroughly. I don't hate Scott at all. But stating that a social network for gamers isn't original is like saying Moddb IS original.

Ign, Fileplanet, GamersHell, all of these sites originated long before Moddb. And what's even worse? Those sites implemented the features we see now............ at launch......

I would like to see an improvement on all things.

Especially, the character of which this site conducts itself with.
