I have some tips for you now.
1. If you want to get into game development, START NOW! I'm using Unity ( Unity3d.com ), which I taught myself how to use last year. It's dead easy, has great documentation, and has a great community!
2. Code, code, code and code. All the time. It really helps. Need to decide something but can't choose? Make a random number generator to pick it for you. Bored and got nothing to do? Look up some cool algorithms and code them up yourself.
