Doink is correct - To make the british play like something besides terrible the weapons teams (HMG, Mortar, 17pdr) have all come out of the emplacements and can relocate freely - They are however weak and work best when garrisoned in the buildable emplacements. Emplacements can be garrisoned by enemy units as well (AT Gun Emplacement can have a PaK stuck in it for example)

Ki-Lob is correct, Game works if you have COH, or OF, or TOV, or any combination - the only thing it impacts is what armies you're able to use and (soon) whether or not you have access to the ToV units

The whole intro segment of the page desperately needs to be updated, just havn't had time to do it yet ;) The OMGMod.com site is much more informative than this page is

The updater DOES require microsoft's .net framework 2.0 or higher be installed - you can do a quick search for .NET 2.0, should be easy to find

Sounds like you figured that out on your own tho

You can watch a good quality streaming version here

Or download a full quality non-streaming version (308 megs) here

Sorry for the trouble.... hopefully ModDB fixes this malarky....

Out of curiosity have you played the game? It sounds like you've got some serious concerns about the Balance of vanilla Company of Heroes, not OMG...

Object editor may come out some day in a meaningful capacity and when we do we have a modeler on staff and one of the animators from the Red Orchestra team who will be helping us with the new unit implementation.

End of the day we'll only put new models into the game when the tools become available to do it at a professional level, anything that stands out from Company of Heroes retail product isn't really acceptable for the mod IMO

No worries man, we only released because there was a large demand for the ability to play the PE & British in a persistent environment and (frankly) we needed the games played to get the balance right. This is a beta release, in the next 6-8 weeks we will be releasing our full 1.0 finished product that will have the doctrines, launcher 2.0 and a number of other things. We'll see you then :)

um, what? seriously dasnoob, why do you have to turn this into a competition. Feel free to look back through the EIR forums for the part where fldash announced that they were stopping development... it was before we started development, but thats really not the point.

We're trying to leave you guys alone, please respect us by doing the same.

Also all of the art is ours created by art team member Doombringer82, the art used in EIR is ripped straight from the company of heroes in-game files, so its not their art - its relics.

When Europe in Ruins came back from the dead end of november we knew this comparison would be inevitably drawn because frankly, if you're on the outside looking in they look pretty damn similar, and frankly thats intentional - EIR did alot of things right and they're demise was what inspired us to spend months of our lives recreating the system that took them over a year to complete, in a original form from scratch.

The reality is that we do things very differently, and if you want more information than that you really need to hang around the community

What makes OMG different from EIR? We have new units, OF Factions implemented (EIR started up again in November and now they're apparently doing something similar to us) we have ENORMOUS doctrines set for implementation within the next 2 months - Over 600 different doctrine abilities many of which give new in-game abilities without being overpowered. Our style of balance is different where as you go through the game instead of increasing the power of your army at every turn you instead customize your army for your playstyle. We have new systems in place to help newbies play a more competitive game by helping them get up to the "average" level of veterancy and Victory Points (used to buy Resource Bonuses, Advanced Training System pips, and Doctrine abilities). And it should also be noted that we've designed this every step of the way with the larger community in mind - Not Europe in Ruins community, but a larger player base.

One of the main areas where we are different is that while they've always been of the mindset "Stick to Vanilla CoH gameplay because that is good and fun" we believe that there is room to expand the gameplay with things like new units, abilities, etc. in ways that stick to the core mechanics set in place like Vanilla.

in a Competitive Multiplayer game, balance is key - And our focus on it is quite significant.

End of the day, what we share with EIR is a core concept - Persistency. As far as design philosophy, implementation style, community interaction, we are completely different.

OMG was made by long time players of EIR as has been previously discussed in comments - In July of 2008 the development team of EIR announced they would no longer be supporting or developing the game or community, they would keep the servers hot as long as there were enough donations rolling in to pay for it and they were closing the community ventrilo server and if we wanted to keep it alive we should buy one of our own and put it up in the next 24 hours.

So we did.

We than approached the development staff of europe in ruins to take over development of the project since they never got around to fixing many of the major bugs and balance issues that plagued the game, also they never got to the mythical 2.0 which was going to have the Opposing Fronts factions, but were rebuffed - The dev over there was not interested in what we had to say.

So we made our own version of the game and yes, to the naked eye it looks like we're ripping them off but like 99% of our code is build by our team, the notable exception being the Javascript interface used in the army creation process, which was made by a freelancer for Europe in Ruins that we have permission to use now. The whole backend, the whole game code, everything is completely ours. Even that will be removed in the next month or two when the MapsLauncher finishes and we move army creation off of the website and on to a desktop application.

Its really a multiplayer focused mod ;) Best practice you can get is vs players your skill level (even if your total newbies).

You should give it a try ;)

No, you cannot play OMG in single player or skirmish - I encourage you to try the multiplayer though because it plays out very differently than regular company of Heroes, and now is a GREAT time to start learning the tricks because the community is so new - TONS of newbies so its easy to find games vs players around your skill level

Good karma+1 vote
GamerAndy
GamerAndy @ Operation Market Garden

short answer: no
long answer: in theory you could, but you'd have to organize the games and find players who wanted to bother with the hassle - so if you've got a group of friends who all like playing COH over hamachi than your good to go, but if you need to rely on the community your probably out of luck since pretty much everyone has a legit copy playing over Relic

we used the same javascript interface that EIR has, we have permission and its only temporary until the new launcher hits when we'll move all functions to the FLEX based launcher

The entire development team of Operation Market Garden are ex-players of EIR who started making OMG after the EIR dev team announced they were ceasing development, we kept the community together for the 3 months EIR was shut down entirely - In November they opened their doors again and started a competing development.

Thats why there are similarities :)
