The black bar are not a bug, let me explain:
We had to force the game to a fixed aspect ratio in order to properly fit the screen with our hand drawn graphics.
We choose a pure 16:9 aspect ratio to best fit both 4:3 TVs and HD widescreen monitors.
Another reason was gameplay: if we didn't forced the aspect ratio the difficulty of the game and the gameplay would have ended to be very difficult to tune. On a 4:3 monitor you have less horizontal space, making the fight dynamics very different from a Widescreen TV.
To best support any kind of monitor we would had make to distinct games with graphics asset and gameplay dynamics especially tuned for 4:3 monitors and for widescreen monitors.
Too much effort, believe me.
The only solution was to make the game at a fixed aspect ratio and adapt it to different monitors using the black bars.
