Company of Heroes: Far East War

Mod review

Far East definitely has a good hook to draw you in, fighting in one of the most oft-forgotten operational areas of World War II. Fighting as the IJA or the collective Chinese military forces is something few people would ever think to buy and enjoy. Both factions are extremely detailed and all trees are definitely unique in their boosts, units, and counters so variety is not an issue.

Personally, I'd like to see more in the way of making the factions more unique. Voice clips of actual Chinese and Japanese dialogue would be a nice piece of immersion, since it does throw you off a little to hear a squad of IJA soldiers call out that they're defending the Fatherland.

Overall a good mod, and one I can't wait to see more development on.

Company of Heroes: Eastern Front

Mod review

Eastern Front is definitely one of the better mods out there for any game. In the words of TV Tropes, it's definitely an original flavor mod and feels exactly like what should've been the inclusion of the Soviet and East German forces into Company of Heroes. As mentioned by other reviews, the game still needs a heavy dose of balance though. Still, such work is well within the skills of the mod team, and I can't wait to see the next release when it arrives.

Tiberium Essence

Mod review

Good: Goes back and returns us to the game C&C 3 was probably meant to be. No backwards inertia for GDI walker tech, and no giant jump forward for Nod's units. Nod cyborgs add another level of infantry warfare for Nod, and forces GDI and the Scrin to reorganize from this thread. Scrin designs make more sense; still maintains the bio-tech feel, but also makes it feel like an alien invasion, not just giant bugs. Art assets beautiful, and the forgotten feel like a real bonus to capture, not just another barracks. Avatar upgrade system now makes sense, GDI mechs feel appropriately powerful.

Bad: Some of the models feel either unfinished or missed parts, ie: GDI tech lab is missing upgrade model for EMP warheads. Minor balance tweaks, ie; Nod banshee feels too powerful, perhaps scale back attack power slightly.

Final: A great mod with a bright future, the bigger picture outweighs any flaws you could find. The addition of the Tacitus archive and the powerful reward units from it should make gameplay on certain maps even harder and faster.

Black Mesa

Mod review

They took the FPS that changed everything, and brought it into the 21st century. My hat goes off to Black Mesa Source, for doing what we've all probably been dreaming of.

The Red Alert

Mod review

It's a well-structured mod, but it lacks any real flavor that evokes the classic RA1 feel. More detail into the unit textures and actions could do that, but those are just my thoughts.

Red Alert 3 Paradox

Mod review

A few of the reviews mention that promises and results are two different things, but looking over what has been released, I see good things in the future of this mod. All mods need a little spit and polish to shine, Paradox just needs the time to grow.
