Don't sweat over the typos. You're still in alpha; these things are something I expect to encounter.

You're correct; I only used the map editor. I guess I assumed the mission editor was just a part of the map editor when it came to improvements. Oops.

Whenever y'all get the map editor in, or at least some basic tools to let us import heightmaps and such, you can bet I'll be back to do more testing. :D

Totally tolerable. Just wanted to point them out so they can be fixed; no biggie. It's a 'developer front-end' anyway so I don't expect the most sanitary of environments.

The big issue is the "can't save anything without it crashing" issue. This kills the mission editor :p

Aww; y'all spent all that time and the editor's just unusable. :(
Hope you guys can get it up and running; can't wait to sink my teeth in!

Listing my encountered issues (v0.2260) here:
[Editor]
* Main Scene Data
* Sun Tab
- Ground light's specular scatter color box never changes.
/ Value is kept when color picker is re-opened, but displayed color does not change.
- Hour's values for time (I assume Hour | Minutes?) do not display
* Fog Tab
- Fog Start Distance above 30,000 results in instant whiteout.
- Fog does not appear to take color values from fog color/altitude.
- Before 30,000 Fog does not appear to change.
- Fog begins with nonsense variable (-3.06^e12 or something)
* General UI
* Mode select
- Text is unreadable unless selected in mode dropdown.
* General Issues
* White fog is constantly under the camera; no matter the height.
* No terrain editing tool? Unsure; might've just missed it.
-Y'all still going the route of modeling the terrain via another program?
- Could we get Vector Thrust to import RAW-type DEMs or just simple black/white elevation maps at least?
* Couldn't find a place to name the mission or give it a briefing.
- Assuming this is a WIP feature that just hasn't arrived yet.
* No tooltips - if we don't have a manual, we really need tooltips to figure out what parts of the interface do that can't be deciphered through simple experimentation alone.

* Crashes
* Crash on Save
* Crash on Save As (following same format as other map names)
- MountainM1 was save as file name.

* Typos
- Sun Difuse Color [Sun Diffuse Color]
- Sun Sepecular Color [Sun Specular Color]
- Sun Cast Shadows [Sun Casts Shadows]
- Ground Light Scater [Ground Light Scatter]
- Scater Light Difuse Color [Scatter Light Diffuse Color]
- Scater Light Specular Color [Scatter Light Specular Color]

Please let me know if you need more.

Really? I don't remember any of our game's patches taking that long to go up. It was like a few days, tops.

But TimeSymmetry recommended to access it from the menu; just reporting it as a bug. I'll try out the in-mission grab in a bit.

Edit: Ah, I see the problem. The version that's currently up on Desura is v02250; the version that's meant to be up is v02260. Maybe they just haven't uploaded the new build yet?

Though we wished we had scenarios and campaigns at this time they are unfortunately not a part of the game at the moment.

So it's pretty much a skirmish mode sort of thing much like the old Master of Orion games. There is a multiplayer component as well if you'd like a little variety in your game; human opponents play the game much more competitively and with a greater variety in design than the computers do at this moment.

We're working on the AI however and expect it to in this patch or an upcoming patch work much better with the new economy and both expand its ability to strategically adapt to situations and outsmart the player in a couple of areas.

Hahaha. They don't look exactly like that, but I do agree that there's a somewhat similar aesthetic going on texture-wise. Shivans tend to like the 'rough' and 'plated' look and like claws and mouths.

According to some, it isn't unfair to pit wealthy independent developers against others as the awards should be unbiased so I bet they would welcome both Rocksteady and Valve to the competition next year.

I expect either Arkham City or Portal 2 to take every category. :p

"How financially successful a game is should not enter into the competition's judging if the award is unbiased."
I want the award to be subtly biased; this is not contradictory, you just don't understand what I'm saying. An unbiased award is an unfair award -- you have to be biased toward not going with the mainstream opinion to offer a good critical opinion, otherwise you're just nodding your head along with everyone else -- and potentially you're also ignoring other titles that you might otherwise be less inclined to look into because you feel that 'this title is unapproachable'. The criticism and judging must be divorced from the mainstream opinion and live on its own merits.

From your statement that you think I'm being contradictory, I don't believe you really read my post. I'm of the belief that you skimmed it. Actually read it otherwise we're going to be talking past each other.

"maybe we can end this on good terms by agreeing that posting 6 paragraph rebuttals for 10 pages is a universally stupid thing to do on the internet regardless of what your arguing. "
If you don't want six paragraph rebuttals, don't type six paragraphs.

"I'm the one saying that financial success shouldn't come into play"
I'm saying that it should be subtly weighted; that it must be biased out of necessity. It's an awards ceremony's judge's duty to not simply hand out an award to whoever was the most successful -- it's to hand out the award to whoever deserves it the most. This should not be a popularity contest -- there already is one and it's called Player's Choice.

"they are the exact same thing."
To equate Rocksteady Games on a 1:1 basis with Taleworlds Entertainment back with M&B 1 would be unfair, wouldn't it? One is run by seasoned industry professionals with plenty of money saved up, with enough professional connections to get them the Batman license for Arkham Asylum, incredible voice actors, the writers for the comics themselves, etc. No publisher, so they're an independent studio. Should we judge both just the same?

"only the games nobody knows about are worth mentioning."
The games nobody knows about deserve to win more than the games that are already popular because: See my prior comment.

"then would it be deserving of this prize?"
I'm not the judges. If your assertion is that I'm saying all this to be 'hip' and divisive, you should re-examine my arguments.

"you seem to be suggesting that these games are not the best they are just popular, but they are popular BECAUSE they are the best."
Only popular games can be good? They're popular because they're easy to get in to. Is Bejewled 3 a top-tier title representative of the best indie gaming has to offer?

"it's still better to help these people than some one else."
In sum: Show people FarmVille and say 'this is gaming' because this gets more people into gaming. There are a number of flawed assumptions and illogical fallacies in assuming that's the "best and only way" to get people into games. Further, it's disingenuous because indie games are not 'entry level games'. That's an insult to the entire medium.

@d2king: I agree whole-heartedly.

Awarding the 'best independently-made games' is completely different from awarding the 'best indie games'. How financially successful a game is should not enter into the competition's judging if the award is unbiased. In the same vein, I would not award the Customer Service Award to Microsoft every year simply because they service the most customers among software distributors -- I would favor the company that has the, bar-none, best customer service on a per-person basis.

To the point: "to NOT support these games in this way would be not only unfair, because they deserve the praise, but it would be doing a disservice to all independent games and their developers."
Which is more of a disservice to indie games (in perspective: to developers who have no money who may be unable to make another game without commercial success): Putting a game that's already on a pedestal with a developer who is now more than capable of funding themselves on a higher pedestal or putting a polished game that's not quite so financially or commercially successful as the pedestal'd title, but just as qualified and well-put-together or more well put together on a pedestal?

The first choice puts an independent game on a pedestal. The second choice elevates indie games as a whole on a pedestal. The first choice makes 'a champion' for indie games. The second choice shows people there's more than one good indie game out there. The first choice awards a commercially successful developer, the second choice awards a developer a potential chance to financially secure themselves.

"God damn it I'm good."
:\ Well aren't you annoyingly and undeservedly smug.

>1. you guys should make a movement system like homeworld 2's
It has been suggested before. Why, specifically, would you want it?

>2. my haulers are acting really strange some act normally while some stop trading after a while and i cant fix it
This is probably related to these known issues that are resolved in the next patch:
[Fixed] Haulers could get stuck doing nothing waiting for a resource to become available instead of trading in different resources.
[Fixed] Haulers ended up with wrong / negative cargo after trading with a planet that had cargo storage.
[Fixed] Haulers would end up filled with one particular resource (usually adv. parts) when its supply outweighed demand.

Oh you didn't try to manually update the demo with the patches, did you? Yes, it won't patch correctly. You need the new demo itself as the patches would be no use and simply serve to confuse the game and introduce very odd bugs.

Here's a direct link to the new demo: Starruler.blind-mind.com

To clarify: I meant space-based construction as to the fact that currently ships/stations in space don't have any means to convert Ore into usable materials on their own.

Yes though space-based construction is not fully expansive at this time. That is being worked on for the next patch.

You're probably on an ATI card? If you are, disable Catalyst AI as that is known to occasionally cause problems. If not, make sure to get your OS up to date and your graphics card drivers up to date.

If neither of those help, please post your problem in our Support forums over at forums.blind-mind.com and we'll help as best we can. :)

Also, this demo is very out-of-date. We recommend that you try out the more recent demo to get a more accurate picture of what the game is currently like.

FirgofUmbra - - 93 comments @ Star Ruler Patch Version 1.0.2.8 - 1.0.3.0

All digital distributors should be either at 1030, 1028, or 1024. If you simply redownload the game from them you should get one of the above versions, each of which is only one patch away from 1030. On our website we offer a 1024->1030 patch if you receive 1024.

It should be listed in the top-right corner of the main menu's screen. If the version number is not displayed there, it is likely that you have version 1.0.0.0.

If you have an ATI card it's likely that you have Catalyst AI turned on; due to ATI not following the OpenGL specifications in some modes (such as when Catalyst AI is turned on), textures with certain properties do not display correctly.

If you have an nVidia or other kind of card, please post your log.txt (you can find it in the link to your User Files, which is located in the game's installed directory) in our support forums so that we can provide further assistance and diagnosis to resolve your problem. :)
