I find it sad that the 3D RTS genre has died a death, games like Nexus: The Jupiter incident, Homeworld and Starfleet Command just aren't around any more and if I have to roll up my sleeves and drag the genre back from the pits of despair then so help me I will, I feel its time to don my indie cap and get amongst my companions. Hi my name is James and i've been geeking it out for quite a while. My first PC was an Amstrad 286 with 640kb of memory with 3 games; Prince of Persia (still a classic,) F15 and a golf game. Once i’d played the death out of all of those games I turned to cannibalising the operating system and that’s when I found QBasic. That was all I needed, from the age of 8 I was programming small computer games and apps. See my homepage for more information on me.

The game is back, sorry I disappeared - I suffered burnout and funds dried up, I had to go away and sort myself out.

There's more info on the new blog Shallowspace.co

Well this is more of a 'forbidden artwork' shot - it's not in-game.

The bright cloud scenery better shows off the shapes and textures.

Best endeavours i'd say, although consideration has been made for it - multiplayer first.

There are directional shields and subsystem targeting, directional armour is a good idea but might be a little hard to indicate onscreen.

Thanks for feedback dude!

Hey, yep eventually - on the initial release we'll be focusing on the TCN side of things. But we'll add in the MFC and INC factions soon after which have mining and trading focuses respectively. :) Thanks for asking!

Tut yes sorry, forget Endless Space. But even games like the X series allowed concurrent player activity in multiple zones and I know, those games weren't very approachable but really it was missing an RTS layer and fleet list which is pretty much what we're adding.

The concurrent activity might be a little heavy on the player but most of the construction will happen in the players 'Homezone' and random encounters will happen in a way as not to stress the player too much. However the player will need to have units in multiple zones to trade, mine, etc. But the switching is seamless and they can just double click on the fleet list to zoom to the ship. The pause, slow and fast time options are all in game too.

Player piloted ships is a ploy to draw more of a crowd plain and simple. There will be great advantages to piloting Corvettes/Destroyers yourself for scouting and precision strikes. Plus because we implemented physics, it's actually incredibly fun to feel the crafts configuration as you fly it. But there will be an entire set of quests for those that enjoy the FPS side, but the majority will be RTS.

It's hard clinging to these petty definitions, all I know is that the pie is in the oven and mmm-Hmmm it smell good.

Well I wouldn't say we were targeting the 'average man' not exactly making COD and people coped just fine with the likes of Endless Space, Sins, and just about any other 4X that has been made :P and I think it'll be a balance of the two. Possibly more economy as you'll need resources to get ships, ie. need economy to make bigger battles...

I've been building and living that dream for two weeks now, honestly it's unbelievable flying between the big ships slogging it out.

Hi there! Getting camera controls to be right for a 3D RTS is no small feat and a lot of work has gone into them to make them much more intuitive. For example, since the demo; you can drag to select height, use the F key to focus on the ships and use WASD or MMB to pan and break camera focus.

It's safe to say that things play very very different from the demo now, which is why we've removed it from the download page. You can find out more about the changes to the controls in this article Shallow.space

Also we are still responding to feedback about the camera, so if you can suggest changes to the control system they might get implemented. Generally though, the camera controls aren't something people mention now and in fact, we've even received some praise about them.

Thanks for your interest, and I hope we can lure you over :P

> Last thing i'd like to ask : do they have classes ? will Shallow Space have , you know : battleships , dreadnoughts , titans even ?

Yes, there are Corvettes, Destroyers, Cruisers, Battlecruisers and Capital ship initially. You can find out a little more about that here: Shallow.space

Glad you're enjoying it, it's gonna get even cooler pretty quicker with the cool stuff we plan to inject into it so keep your eyes here! Thanks! :)

That's pretty awesome of you thank-you!

Actually it's quite a common criticism, some people just want to dive straight into the game without the micromanaging so we're adding the ability to save fleets and the game will come with a couple that have been preconfigured.

So keep a look out for UPDATE 5 which is coming either tomorrow or the day after! It also adds a new ship, 3 new weapons, 4 new abilities and a ton of other stuff. :)

Thanks again for the ranking and the feedback, it is comments like this that allow us to develop the game and make it more enjoyable for you. Cheers! James

No disagreements there and we do want a good product, but ultimately it's in the hands of the player. It makes no sense to forcefully protract development of a title that isn't selling but if it is selling, sure we'll keep adding to it.

Early indications are pretty good and we're optimistic, but as you probably know the PC gaming market is savage and spins on a dime. If I tell people it's going to be a long EA, they'll accuse us of being a scam (it's already happened in fact.)

The thought had crossed our mind too. We're happy to continue working on it as long as it remains financially viable to do so which is why the delivery plan is modular. At the very least we'll get a great game but if the public get behind us we'll really stretch the boundaries of what can be expected from an RTS.

The trouble is, does the market want the game we're making? and can we achieve and maintain enough of a presence to make it a long term crusade? Anyones guess really.

All I know is compare this title to many of our peers and it's easy to see that we're shooting a little higher than the average offering. But the media remain solely concerned with writing about titles from bigger studios and we are still largely unheard off.

Still on the flip side it means that things are manageable, right now the path is clear: Fix bugs, add features and we're pretty thankful that things are still that simple!

Yes that's right, you could also sacrifice some of the weapons fitments and use it as an EW platform.

Although Battleships are veritable weapons platforms, they will succumb pretty quickly to a wing or two of battlecruisers.
