Rico - A Tale Of Two Brothers

Game review

A good solid platformer with charming pixel graphics. Rico has 4 difficulty levels to accommodate all levels of skill, and built in key-mapping for controllers. A variety of upgrades to use keeps the levels fresh. Rico isn't very long, but I consider it worth picking up.

Conquest of Elysium 3

Game review

A very strange game, in that it has a lot of depth but most of that complexity is behind the scenes. The game tracks persistent injuries and equipment for each unit, but the combat is completely automated. The hands-off approach makes for an interesting challenge. Your only real choices in game play are recruiting units, moving them, and using your leaders' rituals. Despite this simplicity, the game is fun and has good replay value. The interface is a little clunky, but the number of things that you actually need to learn to do is small.

The main strength of the game comes during the set up for the match. Maps are randomly generated using one of six preset "eras", which determine the relative frequency of various types of tiles.
You then pick a character from 17 different choices. All of the character options are quite interesting, with several (like the dwarves) having completely different rule sets. Your choice of character also determines which resources you can make use of. Mines benefit everyone, but only dwarves, warlock and hoburg can find and make use of gems from there. A few of the evil characters can extract sacrifices from population centers, while hoburgs make better use of farms. Thus race and time period make a big difference in how the game plays out.

Overall, a fun little game that I am glad I bought. I mostly stick to short games on the smaller maps though. There's just not enough gameplay choices for me to want to play on the huge map setting.

Unepic

Game review

A great old school exploration platformer with RPG elements. Different equipment and magic options allow for good replay value. There's enough innovation to keep you on your toes (the leaches, a few bosses, and the final boss all come to mind). The humor is hit or miss, but the gameplay and exploration are solid. Definitely worth playing, it's unbelievable that Steam turned this game down.

The Void

Game review

Another bizarre game by the Russian developers at Ice-pick Lodge (makers of Pathologic). Unique and surreal, The Void has an excellent and unsettling atmosphere. The Void is difficult to categorize, but it has strong survival aspects. The rules for the game are poorly explained, but that's because discovering the way things work is part of the game's experience. The difficulty is just as punishing as you would expect from a Russian developer, so you may want to play on the lower difficulty levels.

Overall I loved it, but this game is clearly not for everyone. If you're interested in games as art this is a prime example. If you want something a little more straightforward then give this a pass.

Geneforge Saga

Game review

An excellent set of games in the old western RPG style. Probably a good 100-150 hours of gameplay in the set, more if you track down every sidequest. They do play the same though, with only minor differences from game to game. Not a bad thing, but you probably won't be able to play the entire series back to back.

An great value for the price, highly recommended.
