The Dark Mod (Standalone)

Mod review

I've been a Thief fan for years, ever since I graced by Thief II: The Metal Age. In my humble opinion, the entire trilogy is impeccable, absolutely perfect in every way. The atmosphere, the tense stealth gameplay, the brilliantly designed and content-filled levels... the list of things that made Thief great and unique goes on. No other game has given me as much comfort and as many good memories as the Thief series did.

Now... onto The Dark Mod. What's not to like about it? It sets out to recreate Thief on a modern engine. Does it succeed? A million times yes! It nails the feel that Thief gave me when I younger. It hasn't been since the original Thief games that I've been as challenged as I was in The Dark Mod. I thought Thief was a flawless franchise, but The Dark Mod actually does some things BETTER! For example, the jumping/mantling system has been vastly improved.
The game also runs beautifully on iD Tech 4, the Doom 3 engine. For a game that is a Doom 3 mod, there is not a trace of Doom 3 that is visible to the human eye.

But I haven't gotten to the best part of The Dark Mod. The fact that the game... never ends. Unfortunately there is no story campaign, the game is always getting amazing user made levels. Hell, I'm even working on some of my own.

The Dark Mod is a perfect mod in every way, and the continuing devotion of the team behind is proof enough of that. The Dark Mod earns a ten out ten.
