Oniken

Game review

Oniken is a NES homage. It's a throwback to simpler times when graphics were pixelated and games were tough. It draws a lot of inspiration from NES greats like Ninja Gaiden and even includes some subtle nods to these games. The game itself is fun and difficult. If you grew up on NES games, you will probably fall in love with this title.

However, things are not perfect. I get the impression if Oniken was released on the NES it would be overshadowed by the very games it draws inspiration from. That's not to say the game is bad. It's just a lot clunkier and more generic than some titles. It's probably better than a game like Wrath of the Black Manta, but it's nowhere near the level of greatness achieved by games like Ninja Gaiden.

There are also a few anachronisms in this game. It's mostly involving sprite rotations in ways the NES couldn't handle. This is a minor gripe though. It rarely happens and most people probably won't even notice it. However, since this game is aimed at die hard NES fans in addition to those just seeking nostalgia, I felt it was important enough to point out.

Now for the good stuff. The game is great. It's definitely worth a buy. Not only does this game capture some of the feeling of NES games, it also captures some of the creativity. In one level I was on a boat fighting a guy with a sword. In another I was being chased by a polar bear which turned out to be a robot. It's a lot of fun and I won't spoil all the great moments in the game. I'll just say there are a lot. If you can get past the game's slight lack of polish and other minor problems, it'll give you a great NES experience. It's unique enough to stand on it's own and has just enough nods to the past to titillate your nostalgia. Just have realistic expectations. This isn't the second coming of Ninja Gaiden.
