Battle Grounds 2 and 3

Mod review

The ranged combat isn't too bad, but the melee is quite terrible.
The graphics are pretty dated too. The models are quite nice, but most of the maps are quite rough-cut and grainy.
The weapon animations are quite good, and the game is surprisingly un-biased: almost anything US revolution-related is automatically turned into anti-British propaganda, yet this mod is quite respectful to both sides.
The small maps are the deciding factor for this 5/10 score. They're absolutely tiny.
Finally, it's impossible to join a server without 60% of players mic spamming. Though it's a free game, with an expected "difficult" community, this is most definitely the worst i've seen of all the mods i've played. Even after muting all the mic spammers, there's still the chat spammers ruining any possibility of team communication. Team killers go unpunished, as the majority of servers lack admins, or decent admins. It's not uncommon for the admins to join in with the spamming, and this contributes to a really poor experience.

The game has potential, but it needs a lot of work.

The Last Days (of The Third Age of Middle Earth)

Mod review

The fantastic screenshots were enough to make me redownload and reinstall Mount&Blade after, what, 3 years? It's truly fantastic, though because it uses the old M+B engine, the combat isn't very good (a great sub-mod exists for Warband combat animations, though it has some animation bugs and doesn't fix the terrible sword combat while mounted).

I'd give this mod a 10, but twice now i've reached a point in my campaign where the game will just crash at a certain point. The game is kind enough to make backup saves, but using those would still result in a crash once reaching a certain point in time in the game.

The new weapons and armour look fantastic, the new enemies look great and have a nice selection of sounds to go with them (grunts and...stuff), and the great new system of earning rank (and therefore rewards) with different factions is great fun, if a little grind-like and monotonous.

It's definitely worth downloading.

Third Age - Total War

Mod review

I can appreciate the effort, but it's not a very good mod. Well done on the modelling -- especially with custom cities like Osgilliath; however, this is the only positive aspect of the game.
The sound quality is horrible -- mostly badly ripped from the movies, or poorly edited speech from M2TW. It's echoey and not very nice to listen to.
The textures are ok. The problem is, they use a gigantic amount of polygons to achieve an effect similar to that of the vanilla models in the base game. The cities are horribly optimised as well.

One of the most ridiculous "features" are the attempts at AI balance, relying on silly scripts to give the AI benefits (for example, spawning massive armies outside their cities when they're besieged and other silly benefits).

Why am i forced to also install an ugly and unwanted water modfication along with this mod? No reasoning behind this? I thought not...
I'll stick to Rome's LOTR Total War mod, thanks.
