Millions, if not billions, may die but every time Chaos is eventually beaten back. Abaddon and his ilk may say the Black Crusades are part of one big "Long War" to chip away at the Imperium and give it a slow, gradual death but that just means they are too weak to fight head on in one big open war. The Horus Heresy was their peak.

I think this shows the strength of the human spirit which always refuses to yield no matter how harsh is the opposition facing him.
"uncared for by his god" ..I thought the Emperor "protected" everyone? ..or just not your typical Guardsmen?
