I must admit this picture is a little misleading. Most Red Army soldiers were conscripts and had little idea what Communism was, they just followed orders.

And also the Red Army needed to rely more on old Tsarists Commanders, and reasonably feared a coup - so political commissars were necessary.

Not absolutely. Conscript or not, nationalism, pride for socialist state and Marxist world view was taught since childbirth. Even if person was dense, his values still were ones taken fron his socialist society.
