In 1944 Soviets were looking for replacement of outdated Mosin rifles. Winner was (as we know) Mikchail Kalashnikov with his AK-47 (accepted in service as AK). Some of other designers who offered their rifles for trials were Simonov, Tokarev, Shpagin, Bulkin etc.
