Intro
Running EVE on Linux is a very rewarding experience, it makes things such as multiboxing a lot more fun when you combine it with compiz. However, CCP's tutorial is broken!
The Tutorial
1. install the latest version of wine (make sure its 1.1+!). Many distros do not include a 1.1+ version, but you can get it from winehq.org
2. Delete your old wine folder. EVE does not like sharing other application settings. It used to be that those registry changes you had to make to wine to get EVE to run benefited other games, but now those changes crash eve (since Dominion).
rm -rfv ~/.wine does the trick nicely.
3. Download the offline installer in case there are any issues. It can be found here.
4. While that's downloading, run winecfg and set up a few things.
First, make sure windows xp is selected to be emulated.
Next, go to sound and make sure the sampling rate is 48000 and full hardware accel is enabled.
5. You do not need to edit your wine registry with the newest wine release, in fact making those changes you used to need crash eve now.
6. Install EVE using wine.
7. Now, for me there was no fonts issue, but if you have an issue reading the EULA, go to here and get the winetricks script. Use the command following to download and install the core fonts:
sh winetricks corefonts
8. Excellent! Now, we need to make one last change before we can play EVE. CCP changed some sound code in Dominion, and now the jukebox actually crashes eve within seconds of loading. So you have two choices.
You can play with audio disabled (all of it!)
OR
You can rename your jukebox folder so the files are not found and it doesn't play the music. This way you can still have EVE voice. The folder is in /home/masternerdguy/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE/res/audio, renaming it suffices. If you don't, I don't think CCP is actually aware of this, you can't play EVE on linux any more.
9. All effects except shadows work fine. Enable what you want.
10. Getting EVE voice to work is a two step process. First of all, make sure your input device is configured properly (ex. make sure that if your using a USB mic its set to the primary input not your built in mic jack).
Then, you want to go to winecfg sound tab and try ALSA first, and if it doesn't work, try OSS. One of them usually works.
There are no eve voice issues one you get the right input set up.
