The more the years drag on, the more I feel like the Renaissance was the peak of human development/refinement/creativity, after that we have slowly been plummeting back to our Neaterdal state...

As a medieval enthusiast I have to disagree, the later parts of the Renaissance was the time where for example armor development went to ****. Technologically it was the pinnacle of plate armor development, but they started to go for form over function and excessive over-the-board decoration. It was a time of great decadence.
