Well, video games always taught me that diplomacy never works...
I managed to play through several decades worth of game time in Stellaris without ever going to war... granted I made an alliance network rivaling Europe pre-ww1 and then when that seemed like it might not be sufficient built a military that could easily wipe out every civ in the game and the only reason why I wasn't doing that was cause it'd take too long and I considered a diplomatic victory to be quicker.
I'm guessing the contingency whooped your arse.
"Use a flamethrower. And if that doesnt work? Use more flamethrower."
And if that don't work? Nuclear option!
Good ol' Nukes. Maybe start with those instead then go in with flamethrowers for the left overs.

Wipe them out?! What a waste, at least if you enslave them you get a bunch of cheap labor and cannon fodder you can use for experiments/exploration/war.
