“The Enemy of my Enemy”
“A Tale of Two Apprentices”

This story does not finish Maul’s story but it gives some answer. We learn about the origins of Maul – he is Mother Talzin’s son !
In the past Talzin and Sidious were allies, she was promised to be the right-hand of Sidious, but the Sith Lord who saw the potential of the young Maul took him and betrayed Talzin.
We also learn why Maul came back. It was all part of Mother Talzin’s plan to take her revenge on Darth Sidious. This story is a lot of villains against villains, an action-packed arc. We see epic duels like Maul vs Grievous – Grievous and Sidious vs Maul and Talzin using Dooku’s body. It also features some huge battles on Zanbar and Ord Mantell – Separatists against Shadow Collective.
The jedi are also part of this adventure – Mace Windu, Aayla Secura, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Tiplee are engaged in a duel against Maul and Dooku. Tiplee’s fate is revealed – she is murdered by Count Dooku.
Another character is getting her fate – it is Mother Talzin. When she broke back Maul into a “saner” form, she used a lot of power making her loose her physical form since then she searched a way to get back her original form. In The Disappeared Part 1 and 2, Mother Talzin was searching to steal the Force out of the Bardotans for unclear reasons, we know now that it was to come back in a physical form. However she finally succeeds her goal in Son of Dathomir by using Count Dooku body’s on Dathomir but she is killed by General Grievous.
We discover a new secret prison of the Separatist on Stygeon Prime which is also seen in Star Wars Rebels 01×04 ‘Rise of the Old Masters’.
Concerning the Shadow Collective, The Hutt clan is reported to have left the Collective at the beginning of the story but the Black Sun and the Pykes remain loyal. Lom Pyke being dead, it is now Fife who leads the Pykes. However after the defeats of the Collective on Zanbar, Ord Mantell, the Mandalorial Asteroid Outpost, their forces are weaken and the separatist army invades the two headquarters of these criminal organization leading the Black Sun and the Pykes to leave the Shadow Collective. So at the end of Son Of Dathomir, only the Death Watch remains loyal to Maul. Gar Saxon and Rook Kast are two new Death Watch members to be introduced in this story.
Here are the concept arts of the unfinished arc that were released on StarWars.com and also a sketch by Dave Filoni:
As you can see the sketch from Dave Filoni features a duel between Quinlan Vos and Darth Maul, this duel was planned in the early drafts of the story but never made it to the scripts as Jeremy Barlow revealed. Another thing is Plo Koon but we don’t see him in the comics. However, commander Wolffe is mentioned to be on Ord Mantell. Jeremy Barlow revealed he cut some parts of the scripts to focus more on the characters. Maybe the Plo Koon/Wolffe scene was cut or maybe it also never made it to the final scripts. One thing we know Barlow cut was the battle of Dathomir, there were much more battle sequences of the Dathomir invasion in “Showndown on Dathomir”.
