These five mods took the pole position for the most well-regarded of the classic mods of ModDB's past, and prove that a whole generation of gamers still can't stop thinking about the greats. Forgotten Hope 2 took the first spot, as top-dog amongst legends.
These five mods proved the line between mods and indies is always remarkably thin, turning games into, well, other games, making franchise titles out of unrelated genres and sometimes inventing new genres all on their own. Cry of Fear is in first place, but all of these mods are giants.
These five stories captivated players over the years and still live on to this day, as evidenced by their claiming of the results for themselves. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Anomaly gave players something new to explore within a well-loved universe, but we love every attempt by modders to innovate and tell new tales in the worlds we adore.
When it came to where to settle the score, these five mods took position as the favoured battlegrounds of players across the decades. Sometimes together, sometimes apart, STAR WARS Battlefront 2 Remaster took the first spot as the place where many friendships began, and we know all the titles in this category were a good place to relax after school, work, or on the weekend.
As we approach a new age in the era of modding, these five mods weathered the difficult industry move away from modding in the 2010s and came out the other end remarkably memorable experiences that proved modders really can change the game just as well - or more - than they could years ago. The Chronicles of Myrtana took first place as the vanguard of this new generation, and we can't wait to see what comes next.
It's amazing to think how different the games industry would be without mods. Would we still be playing RTS and Deathmatch FPS if DotA, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and other iconic mods didn't introduce a range of innovation that bucked so many trends at the time. ModDB certainly wouldn't exist, so thanks to all the creators and players who joined us on our 20 year journey. Whether you've been here since the beginning, or just getting started - we feel like we are just getting started, and the best is still ahead of us ❤️
