Mod of the Year 2007

Welcome to Mod DB and the 6th Annual Mod of the Year Awards - the definative event that showcases the best mods and indie games in the world and recognizes the teams behind them. The MOTY is a tribute to the creativity, dedication & hard work independent developers put into creating unique gaming experiences that enable us to "play something different".

Over the coming months we will showcase to you the best mods and games in the industry. You vote for those you believe are worthy of recognition. At the top of this program sits the ultimate prize, the mod of the year award won previously by Natural Selection, Red Orchestra, PoE2 and Garry's Mod. Thanks to our sponsors, this year we have a few surprizes up our sleaves not to mention a slew of prizes for the participating teams.

From Dec 1st to Jan 1st, industry professionals, developers, gamers and the general public cast their votes to decide which mods define the cutting edge of interactive entertainment and which mod teams attain gaming celebrity.

Follow the links to join us on an unforgettable journey as we present the 2007 Mod of the Year.

Big news about the Top 100 Mods of 2007 which is soon to be announced, plus some rule updates.

Posted by on

The Top 100 Mods and Indie Games of 2007 will not be announced on the 20th of December as originally planned but will instead be unveiled on the 22nd of December. We have decided to push back the date to include 48hours more voting due to a few reasons:

  • A rule amendment which states any mod released in 2006 which has not released a significant new version in 2007 (and has made the top 100 before) will not be eligible to make the top 100 in 2007
  • The voting is currently very tight from the 90 to 110 mark with only a handful of votes separating the competitors, so we felt an extra 48hours of voting may come in handy... especially when you consider the following:
  • This years top 100 mods will be showcased on the AMD! Game website as well as Mod DB and considering this site sees 4 million gamers a month, this represents an amazing opportunity for the top 100 to reach a different big audience of people and companies beyond the Mod DB

As always good luck to all developers, modders we encourage you to make the most of the next few hours because you don't want to just miss out on making this years top 100!

Since our "The Way" mod is a small one and it's acually released here in mid 2007, it is probably lying down in the 90-110th place. I really hope we make it :-)

So good mods belonging to games with small fanbases lose out, and Bleh mods for popular games / engines will grab the limelight.

If there were some way to compensate for these skewed fanbases, maybe the contest would actually be worth something.

Sorry if i'm abit jaded, but I dont think any old school mods stand much of a chance here. Shame, too. Just played a mod for Hexen the other day that was really impressive.

That's why we wait for the Editor's Choice Awards. I was a big pusher for mods on games with smaller fanbases. I can only hope this staff follows the example.

This just means that mods which have been released in previous years won't be included, that's all. After all, this is mod of the year awards & not mod of the decade, so why should previously released mods of previous years steal valuable votes.

As for old school games loosing out, well this is rubbish, as I have a Max Payne 1 mod that's currently got a mod ranking of 244, & a mate of mine who has also got a Max Payne 1 mod on the go, has a mod ranking of 13.

So it's not how old the game engine that your making your mod on that count's but how good your mod looks & plays.....;)

I was wondering how the vote-system works.
At one moment in time, our "Project Stealth" mod was at 460 and 1 hour later we were again at 37.

frvge: the ranks on profile pages are based on profile visits. They are not to do with this voting.

Furthermore they are reset each day so the rank is per-day.

Thank you. That clears it up for me. So there's no way to check your position on the voting, except for the top-6 or 10 on the scoreboard?

Well, that was it for our mod then (which was released in late 2006 and made it to the top 100 last year) :(

Good luck to the mods that are still competing!
