Wing Commander Saga is a free game based on the Freespace 2 Source Code Project. It is based upon the popular Wing Commander series by Chris Roberts and Origin, and features a new story line during the final portion of the Terran Confederations deseprate fight for survivial against the Kilrathi Empire. You assume the role of 2nd Lieutenant David Markham, a recent OCS graduate in an accelerated flight training program. Victory and survival for humanity can only be bought at a terrible cost. Gather your wingmen and your courage and prepare to play your part in humanity's desperate gambit as you face the Kilrathi foe. It is a time where even average men must reach inside themselves and become heroes. Answer the call. Face the enemy. Make your mark as the Confederation faces its darkest dawn.
The Freya system is located in the Roberts Quadrant of the Vega Sector. The system consists of a dim red (M0V) dwarf star with four terrestrial planets, one gas giant and several small asteroid fields. Interestingly, the dim red dwarf host star of the Freya system is also considered the most common star type in the Milky Way Galaxy.
The Freya system is an ancient system with its star gradually drifting through the final cycles of its life. Scientists expect the star to slip into the dim white dwarf stage of its life sometime in the next three to four hundred million years.
The system hosts one barely habitable planet, Freya II, which is similar to Earth's moon topographically. Despite its size as the third smallest planet in the system, it has been able to maintain a thin atmosphere that is not quite sufficient for breathing without respirator assistance. The Kilrathi have built up a significant military installation on the planet, including ground to space gun and missile batteries, a large garrison, planet based space supremacy fighter squadrons, and a planetary based shield generator to defend the jump point to Kilrah.
As this star system is only one jump point from the Kilrathi home system, reinforcements against any Confederation incursion can easily be dispatched to defend the Kilrah jump point. This system can be compared to the Sirius system, in that it is one jump point from the Sol system in Confederation space and has defenses built up against an invading enemy force.
