Since artificial lighting won't be found in most dark places, and rather than using a torch that would ruin any hope of sneaking, the player's eyes simply adjust to dark surroundings, resulting in a static look.
Rather than a realistic black and white, blue was used to create a 'cool' color that will contrast with sunlight's warm color. Mostly to add some effect.

In retrospect, I like this film grain much more than the last picture.
