Vilmonic is a living virtual world. Your goal is to bring life back from the brink of extinction.
Protect and breed unique pixel-art life forms whose pixels and color have meaning. Experiment with natural and artificial selection. Craft tools, construct buildings and change the environment. Uncover the secrets of the past as you dig up ancient tech and fend off the mindless haywire zombitons.
Don’t be fooled by the super cute look, Vilmonic is a deep and complex artificial life simulator!
In a strange and lonely distant future, you are the last caretaker of the final few life forms left on the planet.
Protect your animatroids and fungols, guide their evolution into new species, and balance the fragile ecosystem.
Science
Use observation and experimentation to learn the hidden rules of the world and its weird biology.
Sit back and watch as natural selection takes its course. Step in and steer evolution by manipulating the environment or by using artificial selection and breeding.
You must work from within the world to change the world, you have no godlike powers. Spread dangerous toxic waste to increase reproductive mutation rates. Drink sugary beverages to speed up time and get a better view of the process of evolution.
Crafting
Uncover the secrets of the past as you dig up eons of buried trash and ancient tech. There’s a lot of it! It’s not junk though, everything has a unique purpose and use.
Craft new tools and construct buildings and roads and farms to help you create your world.
Cooperation
You are not totally alone. There are others like you, but they don’t care about you or your important task. The uncaring, haywire zombitons are everywhere! They’re violent, selfish, and love to build their own cities. Figure out how to live with them, or risk their wrath!

Evolving genetic code generates each creature's morphology.
A creature's morphology is the shape & pixel count of each organ in its pixel-art body. Organs are just the sets of different colored pixels.
Pixels and body shape determine biological function: hydration, nutrient use, movement, perception.
A creature's morphology defines its physiology. Anims require hydration based on the number of pixels in their bodies. Anims lose hydration based on the number of darker outer pixels, or "skin". So the surface-area-to-body-size ratio is a strong selector for fitness in different environments. Morphology & metabolic rate affect nutrient use in similar ways.
Simple graph-shaped brains create emergent behavior: fear, aggression, attraction, migration.
Behavior in Vilmonic is emergent, not programmed in. Observed aggression is purely the result of rules in a creature's simple brain, compelling it to move in a direction based on internal and external sensors. Mutations in the genes that encode those rules will change behavior, affecting that creature's fitness to survive.
Natural selection and breeding are the only way to evolve your life forms - unless you "cheat" with genetic engineering.
Your animatroids and fungols will evolve over many generations into new species, with morphology, physiology and behavior tuned their specific environments.

Status: Still working on new evolvable brains for animatroids.
Toying with having the weights of the anims' neural graphs tied to the morphology of pixel art "internal organs", the shape of which are determined by genetic rules.
For example: A gene encoded as 93.828
creates a "protein" folding rule (base 4) of 3000303
which creates a neural weight of ( -3 , -4 , -1 )

Update: Version 0.27.00 is here!
I kept adding new items to this release, but had to force myself to stop and roll some of them out for the next update. I made changes to the nutrient-use system, which required SO MUCH balance testing, basically me running loads of simulations (i.e. games) and checking statistics to make sure I didn't mess anything up. Still no DNA tweaking in this update, I just can't figure out how I want to implement it in a way that doesn't feel like a cheat - but soon!
So what's new?
* New dungeon walls and floors! They're now the zombs favorite structures.
* Toxic waste is now a crafting material.
* Added tables and chairs.
* Added more avatar body parts.
* You can now analyze zombs (beta).
* More stuff to craft, like the Fungiburger! Plop one on the ground and your anims will eat it up. Or feed one directly to your anims if their health is low. Or eat one yourself if your health is low. Or eat one if you just want a snack.
* Other stuff...
Vilmonic is launching on Steam TOMORROW, June 15th! Store.steampowered.com Please help spread the word.
