Alright, you guys couldn't just use your own computer/ use an old one for a server? This is a bit much, asking for $380 in donations for a computer.

I do like the game you are making, but a new computer?

No one has an old computer suitable we'd have to use someones main computer, meaning someone would have to buy a new computer, which would be around the same amount or more.

Wrong, this PC will be the server, the computer I already have is just as powerful. We could shave off some features and cut it down at most $100, but the performance of the multiplayer would lack. This is the cheapest high quality computer I can make.

Not to say this computer will not benefit us in other ways, it can house our builds and our entire project as well as our website. Also, we could use it to render images and edit video. As you can see by the specs, this is not a gaming computer, it has the cheapest 3.0 quad core built for overall use.

Please make a lesser effort to put down our goals, if you can provide a better solution, let me know.

I think it would be cheaper to buy a real server, something like an secondhand intel xeon or something.
Of course this one will be nice too

It would not for anything of quality, unfortunately for our usage, a server wont do.

Although, you are more than welcome to look.

This computer build is actually extremely cheap due to some combo deals I've gone with. We save around $86 in total from both of those deals. Any sort of complete server is going to cost more than #300, anything that costs $300 will have a weak processor, slow motherboard, and a small hard drive. After fixing the computer to work correctly for our needs, it would end up costing around $600.

If your doubts about our intentions are due to the look of the case, thats complete BS, this computer is going to sit in my house, my room rather, for the next few years. I don't want to have a hunk of **** sitting my room making the loudest noise possible, that's why I payed for everything related to the case.

Im not putting down your goals, I just have doubts about your intents.
A 1 TB hard drive is overkill for a Quake server as is most of your specs.
As you say if this will also be hosting your builds and your site as well as a game server, all through your home connection, then I have doubts about that too. Plus if your sites about 300gb there is bound to be alot of unneeded stuff being hosted there.

As for a better solution, rent a vps to host a game server.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+2 votes

How is that a better solution? It will cost much more in the long run. This computer will do much more than disclosed here, My current connection is 30mbs, just as good as our current host, so don't worry about that.

The specs may be overkill, but it doesn't affect the price.

The bottom line is that it's not my computer, nor my preference. I would rather not have multiplayer at all.

You could have saved more money. A server doesn't need 1TB HDD space. While putting the server together yourself you save a lot of money of course but sometimes you can buy a complete server (with custom parts) even cheaper at some hardware stores. But tastes differ and I tend to spend a lot of time searching when it comes to buying hardware.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote

For our needs 1tb is what we need. For $125 for 1tb and 630watt powersupply? More than worth it. Also the size of the HDD depends on what the server will be doing, hosting our builds and possibly our site will require 1tb. Our site right now is around 300gb.

Also, near my house, the only thing is fry's, and they are a 2x-3x middle man, so I wont be saving anything.

For our needs this is perfect. Can you provide me some less vague information?

This server will not only host left 4 quake, but it will also host future projects. $380 is not asking much. If all of our 379 followers donated 1 dollar. 1 dollar. We could reach our goal. Aside from the people who dont have a bank account, debit card, or paypal, i don't think its asking much if our fans can donate 1 dollar each for a stable multiplayer.

I just hope you don't start a fad with everyone asking for money for their psp game, just to buy a computer for a quake server. My friend hosted quake servers, and he didn't need a super computer to do it.

Your other comment was deleted because your comment added nothing to the conversation. I could host it on my normal computer, but the uptime would be around 85%, I don't have an extra computer laying around. This is by no means a "super computer" it's built for one thing: processing.

Why work for the money if they are already working on a game that is free? They aren't using it for their own good... It is for the whole L4Q community to use... Your game is basicly just a big quake mod, you arent going to need a top-end computer. 380 dollars for a computer, and maybe 460 when its past august 31st? you guys are kinda insane. The whole point of these psp indie games is for people to play for free, without paying a dime for it. No matter what

Just get some cheapy discount computer, and run your quake mod on it. It will run it just as good as any. If you can host a quake server from a psp, doing it on a low-end computer wouldn't be a problem. Im not sure how you guys are going for your game, but if its only 4 people like in l4d, then you will only have 4 people per server. Its not like a 30 person hl2 mod with everyone playing at once

Did you not read my comment? Its not just for left 4 quake. After this Ribcaged is going to work on a large scale indie game for PC. This will also host that. And this server will also house all our files securely without the need of dropbox. Without the 2GB limit. Everyone benefits from this. People get a stable connection, we can host our files more securely, we get to make more large-scale multiplayer games.

biodude: they aren't asking you to pay for the rig yourself. you're not an investor. you don't own ribcaged stock. you're getting a great game for FREE. they are simply asking that if the community donates $1 each, they can buy a rig that will allow them to host multiplayer, as well as their website as well as future projects. basstardy stated multiple times that there isn't an alternative.

think of it this way: you pay a shitload of money for retail games. this is a heavily converted quake mod with all the same features as a retail game. they aren't asking you to pay $50 for it. they asking to consider making a small donation so they can continue their work and produce a game that will meet, if not exceed, the community's expectations. hell, if you're lucky (as well as greedy and egotistical) enough you won't even have to donate anything and the rest of the community will take care of making this available for you to play. then won't it feel great? playing a game that both the developers and the rest of the community actually cared enough about to pitch in for?

I just don't think that price tag (400 bucks) is too pretty

Now, If left 4 quake basicly finished the game, close to a final project, I wouldn't mind donating, to well made finished game for a server. Right now, it has about 3 guns working, and a few quake 1 knight replacements with changed speed and damage. This game is just a beginning of a quake mod, if it turns out great like they said it is, then would be the time to invest in a computer for everything you said. Right now it is mostly hype. What happens if the project falls through half way, and the team breaks up or something? Then guess what, all of that money went into some guy's new computer. I would have waited for something close to the final product, before deciding to ask for donations.

I read every single news, the head shots, the case ejection. Its really not that hard. I really like this game, but it is in a VERY early alpha, and it needs alot of work. If this goes under, then in the end, the person gets to keep his new computer

When the game is finished enough for multiplayer to be played stable, and the game is nearing completion then ask for donations. How long before the game is done do you really need a computer?

Thats like if I took conscript right now, and asked for money for a computer for a server, website, etc. but its so alpha ATM that it wont be a while until multiplayer is working 0, yet ask for the donations anyways. What if my team falls apart/ they have family issues/etc.? same for yours.

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
Ribcaged Author

If this game goes under, the first thing that would happen is I would sell the computer and refund all that have donated. That is the intention already, to build the computer, keep it on craigslist, double our money, rebuild a similar computer and pay back all that have donated starting with out developers.

Also, our team and community is more than big enough to not rely on one single person. We can't release any product without it being full, that's the bottom line. What if Call of Duty came out without multiplayer? It would be a whole different game, once it's out there is no way to add to it (metaphorically speaking).

The server will take a while to get set up and to iron out the bugs, playable multiplayer will come within 2-3 weeks of server completion. At that time we may be able to release a multiplayer demo with zombies. (no special zombies)

We haven't shown most of our stuff, all we have left to do is alter some textures and finish the engine coding for servers. We haven't shown full work yet, only small pieces like map and guns. Hell the last vid is on a build that is a month old.

Reply Good karma+1 vote

you are telling me you have the 3 bots that help you, all the weapons coded in, all of the weapon models final(or mostly), and you have special zombies coded in? That video showed me a game in early developement still, and if that was only a month ago, how much coding and modeling can you do in a month?

I love l4q, solitude, and I am eager for them to come out. I have nothing personal against any team mates of either teams. Its this new computer thing that is bugging me, for an alpha

Reply Good karma Bad karma+1 vote
Ribcaged Author
Ribcaged

Not for an alpha, The computer thing, if split up to $5 dollars per person will take only 50 more people, I've already spent over $150 of my hard earned money on this game, and I won't ever play it.

The point is we CANNOT release an alpha or a beta (both of which will not be public) without multiplayer, it just can't happen. I would much rather say FUCKIT to the multiplayer and release a minimized game with bots and zombies. Unfortunately we're not a dictatorship, we decide things through a vote, the overwhelming majority voted to have online multiplayer.

We are not making money at all, every dime goes to this game and you guys.

Bottom line, if you don't want to donate, DON'T!

Your point is 100% invalid, you are not required to help us raise this money. As you can see this server will take awhile to fund, I cut off as much as I could by having you buy the bare minimum.

If I wanted to make the money myself, it'd take awhile as I'm actively playing football for my highschool, and I have bills to pay as well.

I don't think that it's fair to burden 1 person with the full weight of this server. The main point is this server will get funded regardless of whether the fans donate or not, it is already 75% funded by devs and will most likely stay that way. The only reason we're asking for donations is so maybe we can release earlier and provide a quality product in a swift fashion.

If you can find me a similar quality PC or cheaper parts let me know, as of yet you've given me no actual feasible options.

You are 100% entitled to your opinion. There are no hard feelings, just understand that this is not a plot to take your money, it's just a way that the fans can help us out.

Reply Good karma+1 vote

Biodude

I know you arent taking our money, you are meaning well for us and your team, but some games fall apart during developement, and maybe before you have working multiplayer, or anything big at all, the game collapses, and then someone is left with a new computer, from all the donation money/team's money spent on it. With my old game, I thought I was secure, progress was booming, then a bunch of people dissapear or walk out on you for family/random reasons. happens to a lot games. Just watch your back to what could happen to you in the event that someone gets a free computer/waste of money if something falls through.

Thats all I have to say. Thanks for saying I was entitled to my opinion, I don't get that alot, I usually get insults back ;)

Like Korvin said, you are entitled to your opinion, but we have found that the deals we can get on our hardware for the server make sense.
