What are the best Total War: Warhammer III mods you can find on the web? Here is a humble selection of recommendations from a member of the ModDB staff.

Key Mods

Below all the core mods that many other submods require:

MIXER - Mixu's Unlocker

A startpos mod that unlocks all factions in Realms of Chaos and Immortal Empires campaigns. Also provides a framework for other modders to use stuff like new agent types for existing factions and unique building slot templates for landmark mods. Numerous submods listed below require Mixu's Unlocker to work correctly, and this is a centerpiece of the modded game.

Mod Configuration Tool

The Mod Configuration Tool is a user interface, and a rich backend system, which enables modders to create settings for their mods, which can be edited within the Mod Configuration Tool. It also makes saves more compact if you use Mixu's Unlocker, for example, as well as helps you configure some of the mods to your liking.

Audio Mixer

This is a mostly audio utility for modders, however, some mods do require it. Acts as a custom VO audio compatibility mod, and a storage facility for custom movie .dat files.

Immortal Empires Expanded

This epic core mod chiefly opens the south-eastern corner of the world feckless CA & GW refused to expand and build upon. Introduces regions (NOT civilisations) of Ind, Khuresh, Nippon, the Lost Isles of Elithis, the Eastern Steppes, several smaller islands, and that part that looks like Korea which the creator of the mod named Ihan.

In total, Immortal Empires Expanded adds 99 new settlements and 37 new provinces, and fills in the new regions with 26 new placeholder factions.

UI Essentials

All necessary UI-related addons.

Unique Faction UI

Remakes the UI with a unique design and changes the colouring for all factions to be more immersive overall. It should be compatible with everything that does not touch the UI and faction_tables db.

Unique Faction Currencies

Changes the currency icons of several factions, turning generic treasury/income icons into something far more unique. The author tried to stick as close to the lore as possible. Additionally, all the reward chests after a battle are now unique for all factions as well.

Building Progression Icons III

Creates a visual progression for buildings. Almost all building chains now have icons that change as buildings are upgraded. Features derivative artwork from the original assets and some new hand-drawn artwork. This mod does not impact gameplay balance or mechanics what-so-ever, it is cosmetic only.

Portholes Redone III

An unofficial (yet with the original author's blessing) update to an old mod of Marcovinchi's: it revamps every single 2D unit porthole for all 24 races of Total War Warhammer 3.

Campaign Weather Overhaul

A complete overhaul of campaign map lighting and weather. The author has created and added more than 170 new environments, with more than 60 new weather effects for both Immortal Empires and Immortal Empires Expanded map. Campaign Weather Overhaul puts visuals and immersion over gameplay, so some areas might not be visually optimal for everyone.

Dynamic World

Replaces all shrubs with each race asset, making the world look more alive and unique. Whether you are a human, chaos, greenskin, high elf, dark elf, or any of the demonic gods, you can make your mark on the world. The forestry of each small and large tree has also been modified to make it more unique to the specific race.

Barnak's Enhanced and Restored Assets

Features fixed, restored, enhanced and new unique assets to improve the visual quality of TWWH III. It currently contains a small selection of improvements and fixes for assets that were affected by the transfer from the previous installments to WARHAMMER III.

Better [Battle] Camera Mod

Famous mod from Warhammer 1 & 2 is back! This simple mod allows both closer and further camera heights, more suitable for better screenshots and nicer view of the battlefield.

Improved Campaign Camera

Improved Campaign Camera slightly modifies the campaign camera; the minimum angle of the camera is 45° instead of 35°, the fog progressively decreases when zooming out, the camera can move/zoom up to 2 "meters" above ground instead of 4, and the view switches to the tactical/parchment map a bit higher than before.


Major Content

Mixu's Legendary Lords

This Mixu's mod adds over 40 playable Legendary Lords, Legendary Heroes and some new units. You have to subscribe to and enable Mixu's Legendary Lords: Asset Pack to make the mod work.

OvN Lost Factions: Albion

Introduces a new civilisation, Albion, represented by Order of the Truthsayers led by Dural Durak starting at Citadel of Lead, and Host of the Ravenqueen led by Mhorriníon the Murder-Queen starting at The Folly of Malofex.

The recently re-released Araby (it was part of OvN Lost Factions for TW:WH2) reintroduces the Arabyan civilisation to TW: Warhammer III, along with new major factions: Sultanate of Araby led by Sultan Jaffar starting at Al-Haikk, Aswad Scythans led by Fatindira starting at Karag Orrud, and The Golden Fleet led by Golden Magus and starting at Copper Landing.

Cataph's Southern Realms (TEB)

Cataph's Southern Realms (TEB) (formerly Cataph's Southern Realms (TEB) 3.0) is a mod that has been overhauling Southern Realms factions since what, 2016? TEB stands for Tilea + Estalia + Border Princes. Their vanilla placeholder (sub)culture (which normally uses the Empire roster) in the game was entirely fleshed out by Cataph & Co, bringing in a new playable civilisation.

SCM: Tribes of the North

A complete lore friendly rework of Norsca, with new legendary lords, heroes, mechanics quests and more. with this mod we aspire to bring depth to Norsca in a way that has never been done before. Each tribe is unique, and with this mod - the Tribes of the North truly shine.

SCM Marienburg

Mixu's team created this mod to add standalone playable Gnoblar Hordes to the campaign that where separate and unique from the Ogre Kingdoms. What you will find within has been created by referencing both official and unofficial sources.

Old World

A completely new campaign based on the Old World, the main region and setting of the Warhammer Fantasy universe.

Includes 809 settlements and loads of new factions. All factions included are unlocked and are theoretically playable. The map features a layout with very few compromises—everything is in its rightful place, for better or worse.

This modification is adding beloved maps from WH1 and WH2 to the game. For all campaigns including the ones from ChaosRobie. The creator will be adding more restored maps in the next months. Requires Map Replacer Framework.

Heroes of Legend

Adds 21 new characters to various factions and 4 playable factions (1 in Immortal Empires and 4 in the Old World). Most characters are recruited through landmarks added in Landmarks of Legend (the latter which is the required submod).

OvN Lost Factions: Dread King Legions

It is by no means a 'minor' or 'small' mod, it adds a huge sub-army of the Dread King, and his playable faction, Legion of Terror. It starts in the Pools of Despair.

SCM Empire Secessionists

Pits you against Karl Franz, or if you play as Reikland, it forces the start to be more challenging, making the rebellion feel more like an actual rebellion. Includes 1 brand new unique legendary lord, 2 unique units, and a dilemma that will determine the faith of the rest of your campaign in Immortal Empires, Immortal Empire Expanded (IEE), or The Old World (TOW).

Outremer: Faction Overhaul

This minor faction overhaul converts the Thegan Crusaders faction into the dukedom of Outremer, that is heavily influenced by the real life Kingdom of Jerusalem.

Rotblood Tribe

Adds a brand new faction of new lords, heroes, units, buildings, campaign mechanics complete with custom art, weaponry, and abilities. Toxic in the extreme, the Rotblood Tribe's bile corrodes any foolish enough to engage them in melee combat, ravaging their bodies and torturing their minds. Bödvarr Ribspreader and his warriors will stop at nothing as they sweep south, carrying bilious disease from Norsca into the very heart of the Empire.

The Sect of Akhalee - Temple of Blood

In far flung Ind, in the Land of a Thousand Gods where mysticism and superstition run rampant amongst the locals, a sinister cult stalks and prowls from deep within the jungle. This mod introduces a unique Slaaneshi faction called the Sect of Akhalee, led by Mahaduvha.

The Return of the Ironskin Tribe

As a child, he got beaten by his father for eating too loud, since then he became an iron-lover. Ghark Ironskin is an Ogre Tyrant introduced in White Dwarf 309. In this mod, the Ironskin Tribe has replaced the Sabreskin Tribe in the Immortal Empire Campaign.

The Black Sun Fleet

The Black Sun Fleet – a brand new Black Ark faction. It is fully custom and not presented in lore, but still lore-friendly. It is ruled by survived druchii male sorcerers and consists of pirates, slavers and exiles of all sorts.


Bertrand and the Survivors of Bergerac

This mod adds a new faction, The Survivors of Bergerac, lead by Bertrand the Brigand, as a playable faction for Immortal Empires, as well as some supporting units and mechanics for all Bretonnian factions.


Mixu's Mousillon

Adds two Mousillon themed factions available to play with in Custom Battle and playable in Immortal Empires if you use Mixer.

Alshua's Ellyrion

A lovingly detailed overhaul of the High Elf kingdom known for its wild horses and beautiful plains. Led by the legendary "Reaver Princess", Aelin Redmane, Ellyrion lends its lance as a playable faction, bringing a new Lord and Hero type to all High Elves, as well as 5 loreful new units.


Dynasty of the Damned

Dynasty of the Damned is an overhaul to the VC faction of the Jiangshi Rebels found in the Nonchang Basin of Cathay. The faction is lead by Yuwei Ha Feng, an ex-cathayan ambassador to Lahmia previously known as Xian Ha Feng.

Cataph's Kraka Drak: the Norse Dwarfs 3.0

The Norse Dwarfs are a subculture of Dwarfs (whaddayaknow) who live in a corner of Norsca. They lived for centuries separated from their southern cousins and only recently met again with High King Thorgrim. With that in mind, what follows is a mix of established lore and OC integration.

Victory Conditions Overhaul

Introduces a major rework of the default victory conditions. It rejects the classic idea of short and long campaigns and proposes a new concept based on completing routes. A route is a campaign all on its own, tailored for each faction, and completing it will be enough to trigger victory and receive the victory achievement.

Rebanner III

Makes useless vanilla banners far more interesting. They have been modified to make it worth your while to consider what unit can make the best use of them: a number of attributes, passive abilities, and imbuements are newly available for banners.

Recruit Defeated Legendary Lords

Transfers legendary/immortal lords and heroes of defeated factions to factions that are still in play, and works for both human and AI players, although the player will be favoured.

Landmarks of Legend

Adds many landmarks to locations all over the Warhammer world, with some landmarks granting access to special units and Regiments of Renown. And 'many' is an understatement: the mod adds over 200 landmarks and over 80 special units/RoRs!

Utilities Useful To Modders

Tools and frameworks (mostly) for modders which were not already mentioned earlier.

Toggle Fog Of War: toggles the fog of war on and off. If you wish to survey the campaign map or check the progress of AI realms.
Console Commands: adds a bunch of commands that help with mod making and testing.
Helper UI: shows detailed stats, applied fatigue effects to UI values, spell WoM costs plus countless QoL improvements.
Map Replacer Framework: a framework to make it easier for mapmakers to insert maps on campaign, and also includes some extra assets (prefabs, rigids and extra buildings) so they can be used by any map.
Execute External Lua File: executes a Lua script ingame when you press F9, with the goal of assisting modders during script development. Highly recommended if you want to make script mods.

Honourable Mentions

Change Starting Settlement: lets you start your campaign in a fresh, different from vanilla location by moving your starting capital to a new region/settlement, on turn 1 (the option becomes hidden the next turn).
Instant Building: a compilition of mods that enables you to speed up construction using faction specific resources, like Prestige for The Empire, Skulls when playing as Khorne or Infamy for Vampire Coast.
Dwarf Thunderbarge MKII: adds Thunderbarge MKIIs; giant, flying, ranged, single-entity units for the Dwarfs. Includes a RoR unit called Wrath of Thunder as well.
Grandolph's Simple Dynamic Settlements Reborn: it changes settlement buildings to those of the race that controls them. Sadly, it is incompatible with modpacks that add races or factions, so you cannot use it with most mods listed here.
Tabletop Caps: adds army-level Unit Caps for all factions, inspired by the Warhammer Fantasy Battles Tabletop rules for army composition.
Auto Resolve Quest Battles: you can auto resolve all quest battles and teleport to them for free.
Decline Diplomacy: last but never least, Decline Diplomacy, an epic mod that lets you block pesky AI rulers from nagging you constantly.

A Final Bit of Advice

Script-based mods such as Change Starting Settlement or Toggle Fog Of War should work with any game version regardless of whether they are updated or not. All the others, especially new content/faction/character mods, should be updated to the current patch to avoid issues, bugs or even crashes.

All/almost all above mods (apart from total overhauls which may warrant a special separate article, and one or two faction mods) can be enabled and used together, without any major issues. Until the next game patch, at the very least!
