This game is just great.
Gameplay:
Explaining why is a bit hard because it is just the feeling you get while playing it. For Example: Each mission Map just looks great and it makes a lot of fun to explore the world, trying to reach spots, not knowing where the enemy lurks and is waiting for you, searching for gold in your mountain while you forget about your economy. While you were going to to build your economy the enemy reaches your borders and just starts fighting with you and everything starts burning and you search a way to defend yourself - at the end you are may alive, but for high costs.
Thats the part why this game makes fun in my eyes.
Graphics:
For most players these good old graphics just look bad but I personally find, that this game just looks great and awesome and is showing, that you wont need much to greate lovely graphics. I work on replacement graphics and know, that you don't have much pixel to show something, this is just great, what they did and how they did! I love these small settlers, running around and doing something.
Tactics:
Most players have been playing Settlers II in a time where game was only for fun and not about theorycrafting. RttR (A remake of Settlers II) shows, that such old games and mechanics also can be used to give the player a lot of possibilitys to do someting, there are traps, advanced tactics and much more most players don't even know.
Still, after 15 Years, I play this game and it's the one and only game that got me for such a long time.
