Tank City is more modern recreation of Namco's NES game Battle City. Players assume control of single tank and have to defeat all enemy tanks while defending the base. Map has dimensions of 15x15 tiles and is composed from destructible brick walls, non-destructible concrete walls, impassable water and trees which hide tanks and bullets from sight.

Players can pick up various power-ups which aid them in their task. If players don't pick up power-up after a certain time, same power-ups will be enabled for enemies to pick them and use them against the players. Initial number of power-ups is 12 basic ones like invincibility shield and ammunition.

Main features

  • Single player mode
  • Co-op mode: Two players on same screen using same keyboard. Just like in good old times. Players compete with their scores while cooperatively protecting their fort.
  • Multiple powerups: All known powerups are returning, but most of them in different form. Powerups will either improve stats of the tank who collects it, provide new fighting tools or change the situation on the battlefield. However, there's a twist - while players can enhance themselves, enemies can do that as well!
  • Level editor: Create, edit and share levels with a complete "What You See Is What You Get" editor supporting keyboard and mouse. Game can support as many levels as there are possible tile combinations.
  • Constant updates: There's always space for an update. More tanks, more powerups, more tiles... Video game is a living product, and in this age, one does not simply abandon the game after release.

Additional features

These are the features that may appear as well in the game:

  • Full controller support: For both nostalgia and convenience factor. Why not enjoy the game from your couch?
  • Multiplayer over Internet
  • More than 2 players: Playing with friends is fun. However, in order to be fun for 4 players, it has to be fun for 2.
  • Bigger maps
  • Multiple tile sets
  • Mission system
  • Cross platform (Linux, MacOS, maybe Androd as well)

Hello again

After long time I managed to roll out another update worth reporting. Recently I kicked into overdrive (again) and managed to produce some good results.

After I finished last version - the one from the gameplay video - I noticed that I cannot upgrade the game as well as I could before. So, I ditched that version and started again from scratch. Result can (more or less) be visible:

Co-op fight

Of the invisible things, there's not much to say without going too technical - this isn't the time nor place for it. Game as a whole is much more responsive and can be easily upgraded.

What can be seen is major graphic overhaul. Sprites are improved (or should I say "modernized"), but powerup icons still remained the same. I'll update the rest of the graphics to the same level and, to not stray away from the original, won't go further. HUD is reworked so that it shows same information as before more clearly. I've started working again on effects and I expect them, together with missing and incomplete sprites and level editor, to be present in next update.

If I maintain current tempo, game could be released with all basic features (single player, co-op, level editor) in two-three weeks. My only concern is that I don't know what to improve even more; I know what I want to get, but how good would it be...

I've just recently launched a web page. It's still new, so content is disturbingly lacking, but I expect to solve that problem in two-three days.

Limited test version of the game. It currently has only level showcased on the screenshots, avaiable for single and coop mode. After that level is finished...

There isn't any. Yet. I'm still working on it, and will provide testing version after I iron out current problems :) First impression is most important, and I don't want to give something that only partially works.
